Hi,

I have alwayd liked the idea of a carry comp on a Commander length .45.

I have a Springfield Loaded SS Champion which would be perfect to comp. I contacted Springfield's Custom Shop and they quoted almost $800 to do the work. I can't swing that kind of money right now. EGW makes a comp only for around $100. I know there is more than just threading the barrel and slapping it all together.

Does anybody else have a carry comp'd 1911?  Who built it and how much did it cost? Do you like it?

Thank you for any input.

You will probably be looking at a custom order for a Champion threaded bull barrel, since it's 4.0" instead of 4.25".   They are generally threaded at 40 tpi to match the available compensators.

To fit a comp and have it look good, you will need to select a 1 or 2 port comp that can be profiled to match your slide contour.  There is a fair amount of work that goes into it.

Then the new barrel will have to be fit to the slide and frame.
Then the slide will need to be milled for a reverse spring plug since there will no longer be a bushing to retain it.  Probably a FLGR installed too.
Then the front of the slide will need to be trimmed at an angle so that it is flush with the rear of the comp when in battery.
More than likely, some adjustment of recoil spring rates will be necessary so that the gun will cycle dependably.
After all this, a refinish of the slide and comp will be required.

All this for a minimal to moderate amount of muzzle flip reduction, increased weight, complicated takedown, and a built-in front sight blackener, and you can see why carry comps aren't very popular.  I think you'd just be ahead to buy a 5" gun instead.

look up an SVI sight tracker. l like a comp, but easier to make. You need a barrel with an island and a slide that's opened up. Lots of guys running this in competition these days. Comps on 45 aren't super helpful. They don't make enough high pressure gas like a 9mm +P+ or 38 super. Probably not worth it.

You could look to buy an old Pin gun from the 90s. they ran a lot of comps in 45 because they loaded really hot, but pretty much not done anymore.

The difference in comp effectiveness between the 45 and the smaller calibers (9/38) resulting from gas pressure is a myth.  The difference is because the 45 shoots much heavier bullets. If they shoot the same bullet weight, a compensated 45 has less muzzle rise than a compensated 9/38. See the article below:
