Like a dumba@#  I mixed up two new recoil springs 16 and 18.  Shouldn't the 18 be the longer of the two?

Length can be all over.

You MIGHT be able to tell the difference by manually cycling the slide with first one and then the other but they are a little close.

If they are from the same manufacturer I would expect the heavier spring to use heavier gauge wire.  

Length could be all over the place.

As you discovered, I can usually tell a difference by cycling the slide.

as NVGdude commented... check the wire diameter
