OK here's the background, Bought used  Colt Commander . Serial # puts her in the early 70's . This is a alloy frame pistol. I shot about 300 rds through her. An occasional  stoppage . I was shooting some old ammo .I chalked it up to that. By old I mean 1960's and 1970's factory Remington .But was kepted in a garage .Hot in summer cold in winter. I moved on to new ammo ( winnie  WB  ) had a couple of stoppages over  a 100rds. The stoppage was the slide locking back to the rear like it just shot the last rnd. The funny thing was I couldn't get the mag to drop out. It was stuck as well as the mag release button. I finally was able to pull it out and everything was fine again. Button worked fine and mag drop freely ???   I always do a safety check on my firearms.  The damn grip safety does not work at all. I am a capable person working on about anything. But I never have worked on a 1911. The pistol was in pristine condition when I got it a few years ago. Externally anyhow  Everything looks factory on the outside. Thanks for the rant and help. WarDawg

PS : The locking back as if the last rd fired has happen in several different mags .Also the mags was extremely hard to get out and the mag release button felt  stuck and wouldn't  push in. Get the mags out and it function like nothing was ever wrong.

Kinda sounds like a slide stop Issue (lug contact area), have you tried a different slide stop...?

It (slide stop) might be binding with the mag follower, this can also happen when using a 9mm/38S with
a .45 ACP chambered pistol...

Another possible Issue could be the mag catch, possibly slightly oversized...?

Check both for burrs/sharp edges...

Lastly, check to make sure your spring plunger tube is not loose on your frame.

Good luck.

There's a very good likelihood that the slide stop is not the original that came with the gun and rounds in the magazine are striking it causing it to lock back. An easy way to check is to remove the slide stop and see if there's any brass markings on it.

While it may require fitting, a good place to start is just to get a regular Colt slide stop and see if installing that will fix it.

I would not go with any other brand but Colt.

Is this a  tweak or straight up  replace the sear spring. Is a sear spring a drop in item or is there more to her. This is not a go to carry peace. G43 and G17 for that . I take this gun to the range for 1911 time . I guess its time to YOUTUBE . Heck I need to do a complete spring swap I guess anyhow. I think I replaced the recoil spring when I got her .

Sear spring.

A new sear spring usually requires at least some adjustment.

They often come pretty flat and need to be gently bent to a curve that approximates the one being replaced initially.

Either. But I'd tweak the current sear spring first.

That is what's happening. It's a pesky jam. The thing is, I don't know how its happening on a loaded mag, because the follower is not available to the slide stop. I've had it on an empty mag and had to stick my finger in the ejection port and push the follower down, which frees it up. You'll also need to detail-strip the pistol and clean/lube it. Possibly the grip safety will work after that but if not, you may have to tweak the grip safety tine of the sear spring. On the mag follower, you could try a different type of mag, the Mec-Gar type with captured follower. These are also better for the aluminum feed ramp as the follower cannot jump forward under the last round and scratch the ramp.

I would strip it down entirely and soak and clean the internals of all dried iol or grease. It's possible it's partially gummed up inside due to old lube/oil, I'd then fit the 3 finger spring and set the tension, if the finger isn't broken it likely doesn't need replacing, just adjusting.

I'd bet a lot of the issues is due to old gummy oil.
