| What .45 1911 would be a tier above the "a good 1911 for the money"? One you would just refer to as a good, out of the box 1911, that has good sights & controls from the factory? |

In what price range? Under $1k, to around $1200, Springfield Loaded, or Range officer. $1500 to $2k Dan Wesson Specialist or Valor Over $2k, Wilson, Brown, etc. Not looking for a top tier 1911 just one that would be a tier above the "good gun for the $$" |
| Check out STI. They are great and service to boot. I have a Springfield Loaded and it is average at best. Poor accuracy, frame/slide fit is crappy. I like it, but it is not a tier above in my opinion. My "good for the money" RIA is better than my Springfield in all except finish. But it is hard to compare as the RIA is parked and the Springfield is SS. A cut above would be for me Sig, STI, or Dan Wesson (DW is alot of cut above by a long shot). |

SIG and S&W offer a lot for the money. They certainly do. Well built 1911s with good accuracy, lots of features, and excellent warranties too. Years of shooting 2-3 days a week at both public and private ranges have lead me to believe that the great majority of the " tack driver" internet testimonials actually mean that the guns go bang, which is why I said "good accuracy" instead of some superlative. When it comes to 1911s I've learned to pay close attention to Ken's input. |
| I will offer a different opinion, I have a Desert Eagle 1911C, and other than the ugly roll mark on the slide I love the gun. It has functioned flawlessly for over 1k rounds now and has the best stock trigger on any gun I have ever had. I don't think you can beat it. |

I'm not going to go with an external extractor which changes the entire functionality of the gun. at least S&W got away from the Schwartz safety, but neither can be had as a series 70. EE S80 is not my thing. |
| I felt that my Kimber Gold Match II Stainless was really nice. IMO, better than the colt and springfields. Not Wilson Combat territory or anything, but it seemed spending $1300 on a gun was where the discovery additional benefits were really starting to become questionable to me. Just my $.02 |

EE S80 is not my thing. The S&W and SIG external extractors, which require no "tuning," are a reliability improvement over most of the OEM internal extractors that come in 1911 pattern pistols these days, and the E Series 1911s have no mechanical firing pin safeties. I'm definitely nowhere near the 1911 expert that you are; but I'm a high volume shooter, and the SIG and S&W 1911s are true turnkey guns that are ready to run reliably right out of the box. |
