I noticed while reading the manual Kimber supplied with my Pro Carry II that it said not to strip the pistol down past removing the barrel from the slide. On Colts I always removed the extractor and firing pin when cleaning. So looking back at the Colt manuals, they also don't provide info on stripping the slide.
It's not hard. When I asked my Glock guy about it he shrugged and said he had no idea why I would bother. Who else strips the slide on their 1911's? If I'm the only OCD 1911 owner I may stop doing it, or maybe only do it once in a while. Paladin |

If you shoot your 1911 frequently and heavily detail stopping the slide every year or maybe 6 months to clean the extractor and its channel is a reasonable thing.
Routine cleaning every time you shoot it to me is excessive. The military manuals and instruction did not include stripping the slide as a routine maintenance thing, and plenty of 1911's continued to run in some of the harshest conditions on earth. As far as the frame other than in a Larry Vickers 1911 class, I have never detail stripped a 1911 frame for routine cleaning - you just are simply not going to gain much by the effort |
| Basically what I do with every gun I buy is detail strip it before I shoot it to inspect and clean any factory oil/grease and check for any obstructions. After that I just take the slide off after shooting to clean barrel and rails, and apply oil. Like others have said maybe once a year detail strip it, or however long it takes to go through several thousand rounds or so. |
