| People have been talking about the 1911s that are soon going to come out of the CMP, and many say they will not bother buying one because they are mixmaster, or refurbs. My question is this. Will they be externally identical to the guns issued in WWII by being rebuilt in the same configuration, or will they have aftermarket features like ambi safeties and new sights? I will probably buy one either way, but I have to say I would be a lot more excited if they are the former. Thank you. |

Quoted: The majority will be GI-issue pistols. Some will be excess from the Army museum program, most will come from war stock. Of those from war stock they will be impeccably overhauled and ready for issue (though with a mix of vintage to 70s-90s new GI replacement parts). A bunch will be in as-is turned in condition. Some will be Camp Perry National Match turn-ins. |

Most of the Garands we have purchased through the CMP have looked fantastic, and I can't imagine the 1911s will be that terrible. |

Like any othersurplusthing some will be gems some bricks!
For instance ( personal experience here not rumor ) when I was in Iraq and Afghanistan some special ops guys were running 1911's that were of course ww2 era ( the gov did not procure standard 1911a1 pattern pistols after we 2) but rebuilt with later 60's/70's/80's replacement parts and looked and ran like new. ( to the op all gun or nearly all that come through CMP will be standard gi configuration) While in service starting in the mid 80's you saw many pistols from high op tempo units that were totally beat ( like the m60, it was standard practice to bring 20 when you needed 10 just so you might get lucky and have 7 work) On the other hand some guard and reserve units ( one I was in was a med unit and the pistols came out at most twice a year annual training ( just carried in the field ( no ammo and no threat to speak of back then and a lot of guys made to carry one would wrap in a zip lock to keep it clean and dry) and once for qualification which usually meant no more than two boxes of ammo fired These pistols were all original Remington rand with 90+ % finish. I am sure some of the active duty beaters were rebuilt at turn in and some just stored So this is a long winded way of saying just like garands and carbines just a crap shoot ( if they even get the program off the ground!) |

You will "blind buy" a GI pistol.
They will auction the cool stuff. In the DCM days you could get lucky and get a glass bedded NM rifle. They just pulled the next one off the stack so to speak. CMP picks through the stuff and auctions off the collectible or cool or rare stuff to maximize profit which supports the shooting programs into the future. |

I suppose those are the worn rattle traps you hear about.
I've got 2 of the Argentine Colts I hardly shoot because I can hardly see the sights so I still don't know if I will pursue these or not. Besides for just a little more $$ I can get another Dan Wesson and be happy as all hell. |

Sorry, I look at them as military relics and would like to have one similar to what I carried in Vietnam. |

Sorry, I look at them as military relics and would like to have one similar to what I carried in Vietnam. You know damn well that the Dan Wesson's were not used in any military action so why even go there? Did you notice I did not in any way take away permission for you to buy one. So great news, even though I may or may not buy one, you still can. Hell, buy two. Enjoy them. No one is stopping you. I do know that a Dan Wesson with better sights will be something I will use instead of it just sitting around gathering dust. Why is that anything to you? I already have plenty of military relics including a captured pistol from Vietnam (with papers) and just have no room or want for more stuff I won't ever use. To me having one "like I carried in the war" isn't near the same as having "the one I carried in the war". So if we're all pretending, I might as well pretend mine got upgraded along the way. You can still get one though. |
