Ok fellas I need some information on a future 1911 purchase and I'm torn between two models.
I'm looking at either the SA loaded trp operator or the Dan Wesson specialist The Dan Wesson is more expensive, my question is what does the Dan Wesson 1911 get me more than the TRP Operator? I'm looking to spend no more than $1800, if there are other options I'm not seeing please let me know. Here is what I'm looking for: 5 inch 1911 in .45 ACP. Railed frame for weapon light I'm not really into the sig 1911s or rock island armory 1911s. I'm sure they're fantastic pistols but they don't appeal to me look wise. Any insight into what I get with the Dan Wesson in regards to material, assembly, etc compared to the SA Trp operator. I'll also take any recommendations. For the record I own a SA range officer compact and I love it. Im looking to add a big brother to start my 1911 family. |
| I have no personal experience with Dan wesson, but it seems that most think it is a cut above the TRP, I do have a TRP operator, (in addition to 8 other 1911s, I only mention this for context) I think the TRP is one of the best values in the production 1911 market (if I say that much more everyone is going to think I work for Springfield) the trigger isn't quite Ed brown good, but it is a damn fine pistol, if the Dan Wesson is better it would be a damn fine piece, I can not speak to that. |

Quoted: COLT? yes? I've kept holding off, and then Colt designs the Combat Unit Rail Gun. Once it hits the market, I'm going to need one. Everything I want in a defensive rail gun, other than lack of mag well. As far as OP, I've never owned DW, but always hear good things. My TRP was excellent and flawlessly shot. |

I went with the LBO for a railed 1911, simply because I didn't have the funds for a Specialist. I am an admitted Fanboy of SA, but DW is making superior pistols. Of course you pay more for them. The colt combat unit operator is a step in the right direction but it looks like shit to me and Colt still can't unfuck themselves from going bankrupt. You can't go wrong with any of those 3. Edit. My Valor has the best trigger I have shot on a 1911, better than my Baer, stock SA pistols and the (2) 4lb custom shop tuned triggers from SA. The TRP Operator is a no go for me because I don't care for a bull barrel or their 20lpi checkering. |
| I have 8 Colts, 1 Rock Island 9mm, and a Dan Wesson Valor. The Valor does have the best trigger of them all and the fit and finish is very nice. I love Colts for many different reasons but I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Valor. The TRP that I handled had very sharp front strap checkering. I wanted one for awhile until I felt the front strap. It just wasn't for me. A lot of people like the sharp feel of the TRP's checkering. I bought my Valor with the duty coat for a lot less than they are asking for them now so that might sway my decision. |

Had a stainless TRP and a couple Dan Wessons including a Valor.
The TRP is a nice gun. DW's are amazing. DW's use all tool steel, no MIM bullshit. They are tight, smooth, exceptionally well fitted guns that run like crazy. IMHO, DW's are the best value in 1911's because it's the highest level production 1911 you can get without stepping up to a semi-custom. |
| I have the Specialist in Duty Coat. Above the TRP which is a fine pistol you get a more finished looking 1911 without the billboard appearance. The top of the Specialist is flat with the cut lines, the slide stop is recessed, it has 2 dot night sights, amp. safety. I have shot mine only about 700 rounds worth without failure. I have liked what Dan Wesson has done enough that I bought the Guardian and the ECO before their last price increase early last year. I think a week or two later they went up in price by another $150.00 or so. Dan Wesson makes a quality weapon with looks to match. |
| I've had quite a few different 1911s over the years, including multiple TRPs. They are fine guns to be sure, but to me the DW guns are another step up. From the tool steel parts, to the triggers, to the fit and finish, the DWs are more than worth the difference in price. In my opinion at least. |
