Had a friend die a week and a half ago and I'm helping his mom liquidate his guns. He has an excellent condition Lightweight Colt Commander 38 Super in box with manual. Sn is 48xx. Any idea of where to find a roigh idea of value?

You can call Colt or go to their website. They have a database you can put your serial number in. Its not complete but I've had decent luck looking up my older Colts on it.

It's neither.  It is from 1950.  Serial number should be 48XXLW

I went by Colts site but I believe youre right. When I pit the the LW suffix in the search criteria it came back with no match. When I left it off is when I got a hit.

eta. I enter 48xx-LW as appears on the gun. When you leave off the dash it comes back 1950. Thanks.

How do I get a rough value to use as a guide to price it for sale?

1950 is the correct year. 1949 would be the correct year for a .45 steel commander with sn. 48xx and 1929 would be the correct year if it was a full size .38 super sn. 48xx.  Condition is everything.  If it is new in the box it should be worth about $2500.00.

There is a blue steel LW Commander in .38 Super on Gunbroker right now that is already bidded over $2K. Your gun is a highly collectible Colt and should easily sell for that or more if you are patient and wait for the right buyer. GB auction number is 525160463 if you want to take a look.

Those grips molested it.  Looks can be deceiving.  I would want to inspect the internals for signs of dremel gun plumbing.

At least put proper grip panels on it.

Wow.  WTF happened to post 40000?  I surely wasted it.

The gun is pristine inside. It belong to my deceased friend's step father who bought it new. I never thought about the grips to tell you the truth. They are clearly marked Colt. I will look around his house to see if I can find the originals which I assume are panels and not wrap around. He must have purchased Colt after market grips at some point.

My o ly goal is to help Allen's mom offset his funeral costs.

You're a good friend OP.  That's a beautiful example of an early LW Commander.  I hope you find a good home for her!
