Do you remove material from the safety or the sear?
I've always done the safety, but saw a pic a guy posted and it looked like he had filed on the sear where it contacts the safety, kinda made scense. Ruin the cheap part. |

The sear is cheaper, but some sears are too hard to file, and it's an awkward angle to try to file.
Generally I try to take no more than a moderate amount of metal off the safety. If a lot of metal needs removal, I'll split the difference so I can keep some meat on the safety. Apart from anything else, this means you will probably be able to fit a different brand sear later without throwing away the thumb safety. |
Fitting a thumb safety is not difficult, though I did ruin the first one I tried to fit The next one went in easy after I figured out what I did wrong. I just finished a PSA 1911 build, I have two, the first one I learned a lot on and I only made twp major mistakes/learning experiences. The other will be a piece of cake!
