I occasionally shoot 3gun when my job doesn't demand my weekends of me, I've been using an M&P9 with all the APEX internal goodies but I still can't shoot it as well as my old single stack 1911.
I tried a friend's Para P18 some years ago and was able to shoot it much better than my M&P, without breaking the bank does anyone know of a reliable alternative to a $2500+ STI?  I've heard some good things about the Rock Island 2011 9mm but I haven't even seen one.

Thanks,
Old Marine

First, you can find a STI 2011 for much less than $2500. I've seen a few lightly used examples at $1400 or so lately.  They really are the best way to go if you insist on a double stack 1911.

Next there is the P18.  Its advantage is that there are plenty of aftermarket parts available for them, but the disadvantage is that you are very likely to need them.   I've worked on a lot of these and they can be serviceable enough, but by the time you buy one new, replace the barrel with a match tube and add decent fire control parts, you are within hailing distance of an STI.

The RIA is the budget way of doing it, but while are mostly a Para clone, some parts are dimensioned differently enough that aftermarket Para parts can't be fit.  But for what they are, they are suitable enough.

The RIAs are great for the money.

A,gent who always shoots with my squad at the local USPSA matches now has three, count 'em, three Todd Jarrett Specials that always manage a few malfunctions per match.

Meanwhile, my STI Edge runs like a top.

By the time you upgrade and fix the problems with a cheaper gun you will be close to a STI. A new Edge is $1999 and will serve you fine out of the box. Used they can be found cheaper but try to avoid super high round count guns.

High round count, Like the 10K +/- my series 70 has through it?

Not even close. I'll put 10k I'm a season through my Imited gun. Very easy to get several seasons out of barrel. Even then, replace barrel with a good smith doing the fitting, and keep shooting.

The SPS Pantera appears to be a pretty decent alternative to the STI for a 2011 platform.

There were a few on Gunbroker this week in the $1300 to $1500 range.

10K rds in a season, It'd take me a few years for that.  I only get to shoot 3-6 club matches and 1-2 major matches a year, I work in power plant operations and for some reason people expect electricity on weekends too.

I picked up a RIA for under $500 and it is a pretty good pistol.  Finding Mags can be a problem.

Are you dead set on a 1911?  Do you shoot them better because of the trigger?

I'm that way.  I can shoot my 1911s much better than my M&Ps.

But I can also shoot my HK45 and CZ P-09 as well as my 1911s.  Maybe a P-09 in single action is an option.  Easy on the budget but accurate.  Just a thought.

I would give RIA a try based on your round count.

I have STIs and they sit in the safe just as well as a para would.

I have no idea how the classes work, but have you looked at a CZ TS?  double stack, 9 or 40, amazing single action trigger

+1 on the RIA recommendation (for a single-stack type gun).  There's a guy at a lot of matches I got to with a RIA, single-stake minor gun, and I've NEVER seen that gun jam.  And it costs orders of magnitude less than what a lot of other guys are spending on SS guns.

Gregory_K, which STI's do you have that just sit?  I have an Edge, and I can't put the thing down!
