My Springfield range officer has a s.s. barrel bushing; I am not big fan of it on the blue pistol. Could I just buy a blue barrel bushing for it and pop it in or would I have to fit it?

What about other barrels, do they have to be fitted to the pistol?

For future reference expect all parts for 1911's to require fitting end of story !
You might get lucky at times but generally even a simple part swap without proper fitting will lead to issues sooner or later.

You may need to fit it, or it might fit.  The barrel bushing on my 1911 needed some slight sanding on the outside, which didn't take long.  I did have to use a sharpie though to figure out where to sand it.

Next question how do you do the fitting?

I chucked it in a drill and spun it slowly on fine sandpaper.  Lots of youtube videos showing different ways.

Reamer for the inside,.
You can use a drill press for the outside if it is close to correct.
Anything more than a few thousandths is lathe territory.

I have not checked lately, but you may be able to order one 'machined to dimension' in blued steel.

Check out EGW drop in bushings...
you can do ID / OD measurements and do final fitting yourself.
Not a big deal, some cold bluing on the fitted areas and GTG .
In my experience, this can tighten up a gun and improve accuracy / consistency.
But YMMV....

Not to be insulting but if you have to ask how to fit a part you should not be doing it. Take a class on 1911's use a recognized 1911 smith or learn through reading a recognized 1911 shop manual. Keep in mind you do not need to know what you are doing to post a you tube video on gunsmithing)

I called springfield about the other way around, where they gave me a stainless 1911 with a blued bushing.
they shipped me out the stainless for free and it fit just fine.
