A friend asked me if I could clean his gun for him, I said sure, what gun do you have? He responded with Colt 45 that he bought in college. He didn't even know it was a 1911!
So I get this gun and its a 1980 Colt Mark IV series 70, Government model, and it looks like it has never been cleaned and it's pretty rough.

Long story short, I can't get the barrel bushing off. I've had 1911s before so I know how to take one apart, but this thing will barely move. I can get it to rotate just enough to get the plunger out thats it. The recoil spring wont even come out.

Any ideas? Can/should I soak this in something? There is a lot of crud and old oil every where, looks like it had never been cleaned. He is not a gun guy (obviously) so I don't know if he even knew how to care for it. At any rate, I want to clean this baby up and get her running like new.

Here is asfar as it woould go. I could rotate the bushing in the other direction about 90 degrees but still wont come out. It's very difficult to rotate the barrel bushing, can't do it with fingers, have to use something. BTW, I'm not using pliers on the gun, only the rubber coated part of handle. :)

Follow the disassemble method used here....the gun has a collet bushing also..the barrel is flared slightly...leave it on the barrel

Rod has the answer.  You can go from where you are right now, pop out the slide stop and pick up the rest from the video. Note that you actually use the barrel to beat the bushing out of the slide.  Make sure ou have the bushing rotated to the disassembly position before you start beating on ot with the barrel.

ohh by the way that Colt is satin nickel and looks like it has the blued controls...I would use clp only to clean her up as satin nickel has a copper base and solvents can cause issues.....looks like the grips came off ok I believe they should be wraparound pachmayers and sometimes moisture will build up under them...have fun let us know how it goes

Thanks Rod, worked like a charm! This thing looks nasty inside! Good tip on solvents, I'll be sure and use CLP and go from there. It does have the wrap around grips and while they came off ok, there is a stripped out bushing that will need replacing. WHen I get her back together, I'll post a pic.
