I do both open carry and concealed carry and would like to be able to carry my new Rock Island Armory (RIA) M1911A1 FS Tactical II by both methods as well. I'd probably prefer leather to begin with to see how it does with the gun finish.
Those of you who own RIAs have probably discovered, as I have, that few manufacturers specify that they fit the RIA 5". Add to that the fact I need to find a lefty model as well and you can see my dilemma- cuts selection drastically. I am suspicious of ads that broadly state they fit "all 1911s", but should I be? My other pistols are all Glocks so when I order a holster for one of those I know exactly what I'm getting. Not so much with the LH 1911. It's my understanding that the Colt 70 series 1911 parts generally will fit the RIA, but I could be wrong about that. Would it follow that a lefty model of a holster that is advertised as fitting a Colt would be OK for my RIA? Selection of Colt 1911 LH holsters in 1911 are certainly better than those that specify RIA. Would that be a safe route to go? Thanks to anybody who can get me headed in the right direction so I don't waste money on a poor choice. |

It should be fine. The main considerations with regard to holster fit are barrel length and the presence or absence of a rail. If a company only makes two holsters there's a very good chance one will be for a full-size Glock, the other for a 5" (AKA full-size or government model) 1911. Needing a lefty holster does limit your options somewhat, but not nearly as much as it would for a less popular pistol.
I have a Galco King Tuk for concealed carry, it's worked out very well. |
