So the wife wants to buy me a gun for our anniversary - I don't have a 1911 shot a few  but don't have any. That being said what's some good suggestions. Budget would be around $1,000.

Thanks for the help.

Springfield RO from Bud's - $685 leaves money for a good holster and handful of mags.

If you want a full size I say Sig TacOps

If smaller go with the SIG nightmare.

If you want a more traditional 1911 the Ruger SR1911 is 100 percent American made and leaves you with enough $ for 1000 rounds.

Love my Springfield RO. Good buy for your first 1911.

I was about to say the Range Officer from Bud's but see several others have already pointed it out.  That really is an excellent price on a very good 1911.

BUT it also depends on what you want to do with it.  The RO is a great range gun, but not what I'd recommend for defensive carry, nor would it be very satisfying if you're looking for a "traditional" GI-style 1911.
Still, if you want adjustable sights and a beavertail grip safety, and a lowered ejection port, long trigger and a flat mainspring housing...that's hard to pass up.

Plus, it'll leave you enough money for a fair amount of practice ammo, a couple good mags, and a nice pair of replacement grips (the only modification you should make on a 1911 until you become very familiar with the design).

Oh, and if you wanna swap wives, give me a shout.  Sounds like you got a better one than I did!

I finally saw a Range Officer at a gunshow last weekend. $789. I can now see why everyone us so hot on them. Maybe someday i'll pick one up. I have a Ruger and really like it.

So...if you want a blued gun with adjustable sights get the RO. If you want a stainless gun with fixed sights, nonglow-on-the-dark Novaks, get the Ruger.

Use the left over money for magazines and ammo.

The target rear sight is clunky-looking alright.  To find out why people like them you have to shoot one.

Oh I'm not at all against the Bomar sight. And I'd be afraid to shoot someone's RO. Cause then I'd have to get one, I'm sure.

Rear sight on the RO is not a bo-mar, but a LPA only matters if you want to replace it.

I vote for a Springfield Loaded with night sights. Great carry gun out of the box

I would consider the RO as well, maybe one of the slick new 9MM models.
