I'd like to change out the beavertail on my RIA 1911.

What do you all like and why?

special jig required?

YOU HAVE TO CUT A .250 RAD INTO THE FRAME.
Wilson uses a compound radius
Any bevertail that will look good requires frame modifications.

What RIA do you have? Is it the tactical that already has a beavertail?

A regular Wilson or S&A.

Ed Brown and CMC try to get the gun too low in the hand and it looks like shit.

Depends on the gun and frame tangs.   Generally I like the Brown high ride with speed bump.   If that one won't fit, I go for the S&A with speed bump or EGW's.

I like the Wilson style, though the Ed Brown style are nice if done right.  The problem for me is the EB style takes too much off the frame so the thumb safety is smaller and that exposed hole in the frame bugs the shit out of me.

mid 90's Ed Brown memory groove with Brown slanted ambi thumb safeties... cut as high as I thought prudent

S&A STANDARD Grip safety.  I hate those sharp "memory bump" safeties that are all the rage these days.

None I have never gotten hammer bite from the traditional style in 30+ years of shooting 1911's have never failed to depress a grip safety and prefer the traditional look

Thanks guys.
Recommendations on who to do the work at a fair price - keeping in mind it's a sub $400 pistol.

Lou at Business End Customs does great fitting.
Whether he will work on an RIA is something you will have to ask.
Send him an email (on his website) and find out.

+1
But then I would give the pistol to the local smith for a refinish, unless yours is a stainless.
Swapping the GS over to a bevertail may end up costing close to 1/2 the pistols worth, something to keep in mind when purchasing a pistol without these "upgrades".

eta
Wilson may still sell a drop in duckbill type, but to me they look like ass. On the plus side no frame modifications are required.

Oh you will also have to swap out or modifiy your hammer as well for either design.
