I want to install a new single side safety, and I read you should replace the the sear and hammer pins also. My gun currently has the ambi safety so the pins are flush fit. Is there a way to install them without taking the gun completely apart? Thanks.

I've only heard that you should make pins flush so they don't drag when installing an ambi. I've never heard of needing to switch pins when going to a single (there's nothing that should be rubbing on the right side with a single).

Nonetheless if you push in comparably sized drill bits from the right side of the frame with the safety off of the gun, you should be able to keep the sear, disconnector, and hammer in place without disassembling the whole gun.

I would like to use the rounded end pins with the single side safety because the flush don't look right with just the single side.

Since most ambi-safeties are two piece that meet in the middle (well off to the right) it is gonna be tough to get the round smooth rod or drill end in place. But it is worth a try. I have never seen a safety that needs a separate pin. That is usually built into the safety.

I have changed out safeties with out changing sears but they do have to fit together correctly.

You are not understanding. I am talking about replacing the sear and hammer pins when I change from the ambi to the single side safety.

Just for the looks on the right side?
Most I have seen are flush/flat ended.
They are headed on the left side which is under the left side thumb safety.

It is just looks.... you can spent as much as you want.

You can try the drill bit thing.
Personally I'd just take it apart.
They're not terribly complicated/difficult and as an owner you should know how.
You're about to under take fitting a safety, a detail strip is a cake walk in comparison.

I'd just buy the replacement round end pins from Brownells and see how they fit.

The purpose of round end pins is to allow the factory to assemble 1911s without having to do very much pin fitting, preferably, none.

Fitting a saftey is harder than replacing the pins.

If you think you can replace the saftey, step up and replace the pins. It is not hard at all.
