I was going to get a Rock Island 1911 compact due to the reviews they get  and the reputation for reliabilty and quality for the price. I was wondering if anybody has any problem with GI sights or if it would be worth it to spring for the model with Novaks. I was thinking on having nights sights installed I do not know if thats possible with GI machined sights.

I like GI sights. They are small and precise, but novaks are big and quick to pick up. Look at your night sight options and see what "cut" they require. Probably Novak cut.

Guess I should just google the sight pictures.

Novaks are quicker and easier to acquire and, in my experience, plenty accurate.  If this is a carry/defense gun, I'd choose Novaks.  If it's to represent an historical piece and not get shot much, I'd stick with GI sights.

A gi sight set up if you want to upgrade will cost you more for the sights and dovetail work than just buying a gun with the Novak sights to start with.

if you are willing to forego the Novacks, and just install a dovetail front and fixed rear, IMHO the best fixed sights that fit in a standard dovetail are the Swensight... you might be able to find a set on the used market, or in the stock of well established gunsmiths...
