Few buddies of mine were arguing about whose 1911 was 'nicer'.  One has a Colt the other has an STI.  Sorry I forgot the models.  As they are both good friends I was afraid to get too involved but I have to admit I have always found STI's to be ugly/stupid looking.

Am I the only one who feels this way?  Well my friend with the Colt does too so I know Im not alone but I wonder what others think here?

Pretty is as pretty does, a 2011 delivers more than 1911.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I personally prefer a classic deep blued 70's series Colt over a space ship looking 2011. But OP didn't specify any models, or produce any pics so this thread is a fail from the get-go.

STI makes great guns! Also, they got rid of those HORRIBLE giant roll marks. The roll marks are much smaller and look a ton better. You should check them out now.

I'd give the nod to STI, except for the Spartan.

ALL STIs look fucking retarded.

Colts can look good if you find a nice one.

I don't consider either particularly great, but a Colt is a good starting point.  STIs aren't worth messing with IMO.

Depends on what you want and the features you are looking for. I was holding a STI Duty 1 and a two tone Colt Rail Gun on Monday. Rail Gun is in my safe right now. The looks of the Duty 1 isn't for everyone. The wide slide serrations on some STI's aren't for everyone either. But I've never met an STI owner who didn't love the way his gun ran.

But you can't compare the STI or even the new Colts to a older Colt in looks. The royal blue and bright stainless guns Colt used to make are amazing.

I'd prefer Colt. My buddy has an STI, I'm not impressed with anything about it.

Bad machine marks on the frame, the mag release didn't work, and the magwell fell off when shooting it. It has the giant roll marks on it too.
He loves it, so that's all that matters.

Usually the person owning said pistol always thinks theirs is better. Generally colt looks more traditional/classic, sti looks more modern.  Im sure both will run just fine, just a matter of opinion.  I for one prefer the more traditional look.  I also think glocks are butt ugly, but i can appreciate that they are functional and own and carry a g19 as well as a 1911

I agree on STI guns looking goofy.  However, IMO they are much better built than any Colt.  And I've owned many, many Colts, not just one bad example.

I've owned 3 or 4 different Colts, all of them ran flawlessly. And I mean that in the most literal sense.

The one STI I've owned, a Ranger II, was a defective turd from the first mag, and even sending it back to be repaired couldn't fix it for me. Sold it with full disclosure, and bought another Colt.

Now, did I get a lemon, yes. Does that mean that all STI are shit, of course not. But I trust in Colt, and will continue to do so. STI offers nothing above what a Colt does, unless I want a double stack or a factory race gun.

I've got a lot of Colts and a lot of STIs.   The only place Colt has STI beat is in looks, IMO.

The only factory Colt I have that will come close to shooting as well as my STIs is my Concealed Carry Gov't.   The barrel fit on the rest of my Colts is thoroughly mediocre, and the fit and finish varies quite a bit.   In particular the thumb safeties tend to be mushy in feel and look like shit.   Not to say that Colt doesn't do some things right, but STI is more consistent when it matters.

I dont know...I guess I'm weird...but that Ranger11 doesn't look all that bad, and if it shoots like what the vast majority of what I've been told and read about (I'm sure there are turds) I'm interested.
I've got Colts, time for a change and haven't had any luck turning up a Champion Operator which got me looking at STI's closer.......we'll see

Both have excellent guns, it would really depend on the models in question and even then it's subjective.  I've got an STI Elektra which on top of being an amazing performer it's a beautiful 1911.  STI makes extremely good guns and since they pretty much specialize in 1911's they win in the overall category and probably in the individual category also.

Reliability ? I have a buddy that has a spring field ,preaches all the time how reliable it is. In reality it's only 150 rds reliable ,because that's how many times he shot it.  I told him he didn't even break it in yet. I have a dw it's 2000 res reliable . I question the reliability on some of these. Alot of competition shooters seem to shoot & like the STI.  I would take either & be more then happy! Who care's just shoot em.

Nothing other than the need for an age limit on the site, apparently kindergarten has pawned it's lowest common denominator off on arfcom lol.

There isn't an alternate universe that exists, in which the Colt would be the superior pistol.  Rollmarks aside, the STI will have a better overall finish quality, barrel fit and trigger.  I've never owned a Colt pistol that didn't have an absolutely horseshit trigger on them.

One of my favorite things in this thread so far is the picture of the Colt with a semi-decent grip safety/frame fit.  It's a very rare occasion that you would see that.

To be fair, it's a $2000 Colt.

New Ranger arrived at the lgs yesterday and I picked it up today...I've gotta say, it's pretty impressive.
Very pleasant surprise to see, the huge gawdy rollmark I expected..isn't there, it's been changed to a small RANGER 11 located just above the slide stop, the letters are 3/8" tall and the whole thing is just as long as the slide stop with just a small STI logo (outline of Texas) on the other side that can be covered with a dime.
It's not a naked slide but in a nice even satin blue it makes for a good looking pistol.
Right out of the box, it's got a very nice 4.5lb trigger, just a very little take up and click...no mush or creep, the fitting is quite impressive, very smooth action and it's really pretty tight..certainly took more than the usual minute or two to reassemble...no damn idiot marks.
No disappointments yet, If this runs like it looks, it'll be a keeper for sure...maybe some VZ's and a bobtail.
I'll be impatient waiting for the weekend, I' think if it wasn't pouring out I'd have to try out the straight 8's and run a few in the dark .
I hope to straighten out my photo bucket account and post a couple photos.
