First off I know there's been countless threads of "I have x amount of dollars which 1911 should I get" but I've done some research on the options and and simply looking for more input.

So my old man is looking at a 1911 around 1000 dollars give or take a few hundred either way but most likely around the 1200 mark.

Everyone seems to say the STI Trojan is hands down the best in this price range but quite frankly neither of us can get over the corny logo and font reading "Trojan" on the side.

So that leaves us with what, Smith and Wessons, Sigs, Colts, Springfields and Kimbers. Are Kimbers really as bad as what I've heard and read on them recently? Should we just steal clear? What are their problems?

I know Colts offering in that price range is the Gold Cup Trophy, is the only offering from Springfield the Loaded? Also what of the S&W and Sigs? I know nothing of their 1911s and they seem to have models all over the place, what from them would y'all recommend?

Is there anything else I'm missing? What do you guys recommend? I've heard Dan Wesson but the local shops don't carry them and the only TRPs they have are 1600 bucks.

I have three Springfield's from the low end to high end of their line. They are great guns, they only time they have failed me is when I have induced the problem to my stupidity.

I have 3 kimbers and have yet to have a malfunction that wasn't related to a magazine. As long as I use wilson or nighthawk mags mine run 100%.

STI fixed their rollmarks quite a bit. http://forums.1911forum.com/showthread.php?t=438513

Get a Gold Cup. National Match or Trophy, can't go wrong either way.

Do not overlook the Colt Rail Guns. They are relentless and simply a pleasure to shoot. I have yet to make mine FTF FTE or malfunction. It just plain runs on and on.

If you want to save money, get the SA Range Officer. If you can't get along with the parkerized finish, have it cerakoted.

Yeah Dan Wesson's are awesome, but also cost around $1500 or more. The Springfield TRP's are also great for the money being around $1500, but not quite as good as the Dan Wesson. If I had $1,000 for a 1911 right now I'd probably buy the Remington R1 with threaded barrel and raised sights for suppressor use, it's a nice setup. But yeah I'm sure you'll be happy with a Springfield or Kimber or Colt or STI for a regular 1911 for your price range.

So has all the drama with kimber passed? Are they any less reliable than any other brands?

Springfield or rock island is my two cents.

Around the $1000-$1200 mark I'd be looking at a Colt CE or XSE

Colt is a good choice. I've had several Smith 1911's, if the external extractor doesn't bother you my examples ran well.

Dan Wesson for $1229.....Heritage

Yeah the new STIs look pretty good with the smaller rollmarks.  Hard to pass that up if you are looking in the $1000 range.  There's not a Colt on the market that is as nicely fit for the money.

For $1200 you can get a non-railed TRP.  I paid $1250 for mine BNIB.  They are on the EE in frequency for 1100-1200.

You should at least do some research on STI. They make excellent 1911s and have great customer service if you need them. I would also look into Dan Wesson.

My Ruger SR1911 has been 100%.  Also have a Smith that has been great.  My Kimber with $200 of replaced with Wilson parts is now 100%.

These Colts are worthy of a close look. STI makes great pistols and the S&W E series has a lot of bang for the buck.

You're not going to go wrong with any of your choices so far.
There is lots of personal preference when it comes to 1911s

Gun Broker or hit several local gun shows.

I've been selling guns for a couple of different FFL's for about 25 years now. I've seen more than a few 1911s go out & a few come back in for issues. Were I in your position, I would opt for either a STI, Sig or a Springfield. The Sig doesn't remain 100% true to the original design of John Browning, if this matters to you. The Sig variation is that they use an external extractor. The jury is still out on if this is better, worse or simply different.

Getting a Springfield Loaded model will allow you to have a few extra $ to add night sights or other items if you so choose. Or simply apply the $ saved towards ammo?

The STI is a well made 1911 & could possibly be THE best one in the $1000~ range. Colt & Kimber simply have too much uneven QC for me to consider one of them. You might get a heckuva Colt/Kimber, or you might get a turd.

For the $$$, this one is hard to beat. Comes with 4 mags too.

Springfield

Colt

Kimber, These guys get bashed a lot, but Ive owned 3 and only had problem with 1 which had incorrect extractor tension, once fixed gun ran like a raped ape. To put this into perspective, I had a Springfield Professional model that had a jacked up extractor as well that caused me a lot of problems before replacing it.

Springfield or DW, I really want a DW Guardian.  Or I'd take a Colt Rail Gun if I had extra cash and nothing else I was planning to buy.

I buy frequently from gunbroker, good deals if you have the patience and are choosy with people's ratings, I got my SA XDm from there for under my normal shop's cost before shipping and ffl transfer.

STI Trojan with the new rollmarks.
The only thing in that price range that even comes close would be the SA TRP.
Colts are just too hit and miss.  Do not buy without handling first.

Well unfortunately the old man still doesn't like the new roll marks on the Trojan. I showed him the Dan Wessons and he's liking their looks however, much cleaner.

So colt is hit or miss? Really?

What Springfield models do y'all recommend, the loaded?

Are S&Ws and Sigs offerings all about the same? Also I've read Sigs triggers are undesirable, is this true?

Thanks again fellas.

You want a TRP.

Here's one for $1100 slightly used, one brand new ss $1300

In that price range, the Dan Wesson is awesome.  I have a Specialist and really like it.

Id say springfield range officer. I would stay away from kimber and magnum research's desert eagle 1911. I have major problems with both.

I'd say go with a Springfield TRP

Without the rail, they're like $1300 new, but can be had for $1000-$1200 slightly used

I don't mind buying a lightly used gun, but some people are against it.

You might take a peek at Grabagun.com, http://grabagun.com/
they seem to have a fairly large selection in your price range.
