i want an adjustable 1911.  my budget will allow something like the StI spartan or Springfield RO.   they seem to have the same features.  I am leaning towards the STI as the ones i have felt seemed tighter than the RO.

So which one would you pick?

STI Spartan. Knowing the guys that build them in Georgetown, TX USA, you're never getting second rate. Plus STI (Trojan 5.0) is still my favorite 1911. IMHO

The Spartan frame/slide are made in the Philippines, not Georgetown.  They are still a good 45, I watched them being assembled at the STI facility during a tour.   Very little final fitting needed.

Here is something from another forum on the STI:
The Spartan thing has pretty much been discussed here ad-nauseum. It's a 1911 assembled in the Philipines by Armscor using their frame, slide and barrel. All of the other parts are STI with the exception of he Dawson FO front sight. It has the same lifetime warranty as their 1911s and doublestacks. It doesn't have the greatest finish, but for $600 you get a pistol with the same features of a $1K pistol. It's a great value for the money.

ETA...There are Spartans going for Under 700 on GB right now.

RO...Springfield stands behind their products.

The RO will have a little bit better fit and finish and hopefully the barrel fit will be at least as well done as the Spartan.

I have an RO.  It may be the most accurate handgun I own.  Spartan is good stuff as well, I just never owned one.

For me it's cast vs forged

I love my RO..... no issues and a straight shooter. The two flyways were a result of a accidental double tap.

Other than the But-ass-ugly Stainless bushing on the Range officer, I can think of no reason not to buy one.

I looked at both of them side to side at a gun store, and chose the RO. it had a better fit and finish. It was a very hard decision though. The difference in price was $100. I shot that much in ammo on the first day alone.

The RO is nicer on the outside, the Spartan is nicer on the inside.    Whats more important to you?     The Spartan V is a great value and an awesome shooter

I have a Springfield 1911 and it's an accurate, .45 eating 'sumbitch

Never shot an STI although I feel like I need to

Between the two brands, I would go with an STI. Between the choices you give, I would go with the RO.

Springfield.

The Spartan may be a good gun but the ugly front serrations are a dealbraker.

My father in law bought an RO new in box last year and showed it off to me. Meanwhile I traded a spartan V for a cheap ar pistol I built. Handling them both side by side and having shot only mine... I like the fit better on the STI but the finish better on the RO.  the STI is as accurate or better than any of my friends kimbers especially with reloads. The kimbers were jamming up.

I'm on a budget. Father in law is not. He probably spent a bit more than I did but I'd take either any day. Would definitely buy another STI.
