Just got a Range Officer, and we (my son & I) like it a lot. I've seen threads where the park finish doesn't hold up well with a kydex holster.

So, if that's true, does it fair any better with leather?

A couple of pics.

No, I won't be showing my target.

Any Holster will wear away the finish. To me leather is more of a softer wear while kydex is more scratchy. Any dirt in the holster will accelerate this process.

A well made Kydex holster will wear the high spots fairly quickly and then stop.

A leather holster will wear the entire thing and continue to wear over time... This can actually be worse with time as the leather gets impregnabtef with oils, grit, dirt, carbon, sweat and other crap.

In general I personally prefer Kydex over leather, sure leather can be pretty but Kydex is much more practical.

I carry mine, (put the Harrison sights on it), shoot 3-Gun, IDPA, and USPSA with mine.

I bought it for bullseye pistol and loved it so much I use it for everything.

I use kydex and leather both- they both wear, just differently, as mentioned above. Good description, by the way.

Moral of the story is, holsters will wear- if you have a gun that you're worried about holster wear, don't stick it in a holster.

A proper fitting Kybex holster will not wear on your finish. I carry my RO in a Comptac IWB and it fits like it was dipped in it. No movement whatsoever. With a proper fit it wont wear your finish. Like said above, keep dust and crap wiped out of it because that grit will wear. I run the same rag I wipe my gun down with through my Kydex holsters and makes them dust free.

This is my standard answer for everything not needing to be concealed.

I'm just getting heavy into 1911's, but I have 8 of them for the different glocks I have, including my duty holster (6390).

I did have to do some cutting and sanding for the 1911 ALS.

The guard they come with from the factory is stupid.

Allow me to suggest a Blade-Tech kydex holster. If you are indeed going to stick with a range-only usage of the holster, a soft nylon holster for $20 might be your best option?

Mine rests in an old Bianchi Askins Avenger.

Then I might just get something cheap like an Uncle Mike's or Blackhawk holster.  I like leather, personally.

Fobus paddle holster for a 1911 is cheap and surprisingly good.

I have one that a friend gave me, I initially thought I'd give it away or trash it, but I actually use it as a loaner.  And I won't teach anyone with equipment I wouldn't use.

My favorite is a regular 'ol Raven.  Rides close and high enough not to be in the way, and is easy enough to draw from that I like to use it.

I used to to have an old Galco pancake (leather) and it was ok, but it was slower to draw from and a PITA to get on and off.  I gave it away.

Parkerizing is a great finish.  High edge wear won't hurt anything and I personally like the way it looks.  I say try different holsters and find one you like, finish wear be damned!

I like good custom leather for EDC but for range use I'm leaning towards getting one of these leather lined kydex holsters http://www.giholsters.com/silent-thunder-stm/

Thanks to a very kind gentleman in this thread for sending me a holster.

I'll put it to good use.

This is an awesome site.
