I had a problem pop up suddenly with failure to feed on a Taurus 1911.  I usually figure that feed problems are magazine related, but have tried 2 Taurus, 2 Chip McCormick, and 2 Brownell magazines.  Also have tried Remington and Winchester ammo in both FMJ and JHP.  In all cases, when racking the slide it will not strip the first round from the magazine.  Never had the problem before, just cropped up out of the blue. I've tried everything I can think of, and finally dropped it off this morning to have a gunsmith look it over. In the meantime, anyone have any ideas? One other thing that looks curious.  When it tries to strip the round and the slide stops, it appears the bullet is level.  On one round, it actually pushed the bullet deeper into the case, rather than sent it up the ramp.

How many rounds through the gun, and what caliber is it (I'm assuming .45)? It could be a couple of things, but if you've got a couple thousand or more through it you could try replacing the recoil spring first. Could also be an extractor issue.

Just to be sure I am picturing your issue correctly, your top round is just being rammed straight into the feed ramp, correct?

When was the last time you cleaned the extractor tunnel?  If enough crap builds up in there, the extractore could be stuck and not allowing the round to feed.  This is just a guess since you said the problem just appeared.  I would see if it will feed with the extractor removed from the gun.

Sorry guys, been dealing with an elderly father with Alzheimer  and neglecting my post.  Actually only have about 400 rounds through it so far.  If I can get it to feed, I'll do a long shoot to put more through it.  Appreciate the info, and will check out these options. Guns clean, but didn't think of trying it without the extractor.  Actually didn't think that would have an effect on feeding...Guess I should do a complete disassembly and see what can be found.  Again, thanks for the help, and sorry I've been delinquent here.

Correct.  Straight into the feed ramp.  Only about 400 rounds through the gun.  Yes it is a .45.

Sounds like the mag catch is not holding the mag high enough for the breech face to catch the rim on the way forward. Try setting the butt on a surface that pushes the mag up all the way and releasing the slide stop. If it loads, then you know it has to do with the mag catch or locking notch in the mags.

I considered this as a problem, but the magazines were locking in.  The breech face is hitting the round and pushing it forward, but it's only catching the top edge.  Maybe that is why it isn't tipping up.  Thanks for the information. I've gotten a lot of info on the post and really appreciate it. I also have another extractor on the way from Brownell's, just in case.
