Depends on what you have to sell and how much money are you going to lose on your pistol/pistols you have now.

Example, I want to take my mint beautiful HK P7 and potentially double my investment a good short term gain and purchase another custom 1911. Long term this is a bad idea since I'm 100% sure my west Germany marked P7 will go up and value and will be one nice heirloom for my son. Im sure the new 1911 will be sweet shooter but it will lose value as soon as I fire it and start to run it hard.

Other idea sell my glock 17 and lose about $100 but put it towards a shield 9mm for my wife. She gains a new carry piece but we lose out an extra high capacity pistol for home defense and I lose money. She may love the shield 9mm but I'm stuck thinking about the glock 17 and my cash getting shorted.

Best idea save for shield since this is for protection and I'm at ease my wife has a solid ccw rig and it's not much to save up for over time. Start saving change and small bills over a couple years and enjoy guns I own now and get my nicer custom 1911 with cash. Win win on everything and I become more proficient with my pistol and actually realize the accuracy difference between a $1000 1911 and a $3000 1911.

well heres what im thinking. we will probably be switching from out sigs to M&P's. i already have an MP so im thinking about ditching it and putting the money for an colt rail gun or TRP or something classy. the only down side is i hate getting rid of guns. but then again, less is more if your upgrading.

I have a colt rail gun and love it but if I only had one gun it would be my Glock or MP in your case. Don't get me wrong I love my rail gun but it's more of a fun gun than it is a serious carry gun like my glock's. The TRP and Rail Gun are both capable of amazing accuracy and reliability but it's just not as good for one gun fits all like the smith MP series is. You have a very good gun and high capacity mags and I know for a fact there lasers in accuracy. Also if you do anything I would save for the TRP or Colt 1911 and get it for backup to your MP.

i see what you're saying. the 1911's im looking at and have dont get carried. i usually carry my XDs due to size and weight. ive got several other pistols but ive got some type of connection to them all. wife purchased, first pistol, special duty etc. the M&P is the only one i got at the last minute and a good deal.

Its a no brainer.  Keep what you got already and just buy another pistol.  No regrets.

I used to be in the never sell a gun crowd. But they are like anything else. If you want the new thing more, you likely won't regret parting with the old.

For me, I feel like I have too many mid grade firearms. I would prefer fewer high quality, so I'm selling a few things off to upgrade. Most firearms are worth 90% or more than you paid, so where is the regret? If you sell the M&P now, and later decide you still want one, just buy another later. It will cost you $50 or $100 maybe?

Save and keep them all.

They don't expire or go bad in the safe unless you neglect them.
