So I have 1000 to work with here in a couple weeks, cant go over that...because that is pushing it as it is for me...

I sold the last 1911 I had, its wasnt anything special, (AO) but it ran well and ive come to miss how awesome a 1911 feels in the hand.

Ive narrowed my selection down to a couple here, if im missing any options please feel free to toss em out, but it has to be in my price range

1. SIG 1911 TacOps 5" (traditional profile)
2. SIG 1911  TacOps 4.2" (am i losing anything with the shorter barrel? I dont shoot my pistols at very far distances) would also look into eventually having it bobtailed. for CCW
3. Remington R1 enhanced (doesnt have ambi safety)

Im a lefty and an ambi safety is necessary....And Im afraid of installing one myself as I know most 1911 parts need alittle "fitting" to be perfect...right?

I would go with a 5" 1911.

longer sight radius
more weight for recoil

it is the grip that is the hardest part of a 1911 to conceal

now if you appendix carry shorter is better.

For about a grand the sti Trojan is an excellent choice ( can not recall if it comes ambi or not) Springfield has a number of models that would fit your budget ( my self not a fan of a foreign made 1911 but the SA are known to be wel put together) but my favorite is colt - a colt with ambi will run right about a grand

About commander vs. government (vs. officer):

I have three full size 5" 1911's, two full size 4.25" 1911's, and one compact 3.5" 1911.

The commanders (4.25") are my favorite to shoot by far.  Second favorite is the 3.5".  I shoot the 5" guns the least.  The commanders feel more balanced to me, and so I tend to shoot them better (and therefore more often).

Of course, not everyone shares that opinion.

If there's a range nearby you that rents 1911's, try a commander and an officer before you drop $1000.  You might find that you too prefer the shorter barrels.  And if not, hey you got to shoot some 1911's.

Colt, Springfield, maybe the STI that Captain127 mentioned.

This one is tits, but you'd need the ambi installed. Colt 01991 CCG:

I like my Sig Scorpion Carry with the threaded barrel.  I would get one of the sigs and get the threaded barrel in case you decide to put a can on it some day.

I think everybody should start with a 5" 1911.

Sig and Remington both make fine examples. All of your selections are very nice pistols. You might as well plan on buying more than one - just plan on that too

I started with semi auto 9mm and 40, but I quickly had to see what the 1911 buzz was all about ( this was 20+ years ago )  I share the same view as most Americans - 1911s are fine pistols for anything ( home defense , range , IDPA , or even war because the miltary decided the 1911 still has a place in our military by ordering new COLT pistols.

I would add a COLT XSE model to your watch list ,

Good luck with whatever you buy - but also once buying it , clean it , lube it well for break in - then fire 500 rounds of 230 ball ammo through it

My gut would be on the STI Trojan. The finish (bluing) will last all of two days if you shoot it hard (like USPSA, etc) but it is a great factory value.

I started with a Springfield RO, which seems to be a the guts out of a loaded in a Milspec slide/frame with knockoff LPA sights. I fitted an STI ambi safety, Dawson FO front, and FLGR and it still came in under $1k.

If youre sure about the bobtail,  I think all Sig Nightmares come with them standard.  That should save you about $200 of gunsmithing
