Im wondering what everyones thoughts are about bobtail conversions for 1911's from local gunsmiths.  The local gunsmith in austin advertises he does them for $175 and I was wondering if it is remotely worth the money.  Im not really interested as I dont CC my 1911, Im just eager to see others opinions on it.

The whole point of the bobtail was for CCW. It did not print as much, nor tear up shirts. If your not gonna carry the gun then I wouldn't waste my money.

Looks cool

Colt quoted me a price of I think it was around $175 when I was going to have them do some other work. Make sure that price includes a refinish unless it's a stainless gun.

A local smith is local.  See if he is willing to show off his work.  Pictures, current works in process, references from past clients.  Only then would I consider it.

As a reference price, SACS charges $225 (parts included) plus refinishing for that same job.  Add another $60 or so for shipping.  You local guy sounds like a better bargain, but make sure he knows what he is doing.

Edited to add:

I guess the OP was wondering what we thought of the bobtail conversion.  My answer was more about having a local guy do it.    Basically I don't trust the local guys in my area for even installing night sights.

The guy I was considering is Hank Fleming  of http://www.hankgun.com/

Last time I was in there I had a round stuck in my barrel and I was scared of trying to push it out.  Drove all the way to austin (about 90 minutes) and saw 2 Austin PD SWAT guys in there having work done.  If those guys trust him for mods on their guns, I def wouldn't mind trusting him.  I just don't wanna buy something I don't need.  And it sounds like the bobtail is just for CC so I am gonna opt not to for now

I love the way they look and handle. I'm wanting to buy the tools and do a couple guns for myself.

Yep.........it's not that difficult. Only need a good drill press, a vice for said press, an anti-walk drill bit, the jig from Brown.
Files and sand paper are required for blending.

Will get some progress pics up shortly. I ended up having Joe Chambers do a bit of work to it and refinish in matte blue.

Thanks!  Looks like That'll be the next improvement.

Pics are worth 1000 words. That's easy-peasy with the jig ( I have all the tools and bits )
