I just purchased a springfield range officer. I installed an a&s magwell/mainspring housing. During the install I quickly discovered that I was missing the mainspring pin. Will this cause any issues should I decide to fire the gun? Of course I plan on contacting springfield for a replacement. Also I have bnot fired this gun yet..

In operation, the mainspring plunger never rises high enough to hit the retaining pin, so you can do without it. It was put there to capture the mainspring plunger when the housing is removed from the frame, and it is a great convenience when putting it back together.

Springfield does not use a captured mainspring housing on any of their guns, You'll get nothing by calling Springfield. As said above you can be perfectly fine without the pin but take down and reassembly are far easier with the assembly captured by the pin.

I think I had a springfield once that didn't have one as well.  Never noticed until I was taking it all apart for the heck of it.

I've seen a couple of new SAs that did not have the pin.  Just buy one and put it in yourself.  Its pretty easy to install.

If you put a pin in the pistol won't function.  Springfield, as mentioned does not use a pin.  JD

The housing doesn't even have the hole for the pin, in fact.

If you still have the bent pin that comes with new Springfields (looks like a tiny boomerang), you can capture the mainspring assembly with it prior to reinstallation.   Pull the hammer back a bit and you can then pull the pin out.

Are you talking about the one he bought, or the one currently on there.

My milspec had a curved msh with no pin because of the ILS.  I guess that's why.  But it certainly does have a hole for a retaining pin.  I bought one and put it in there.  Not sure about the RO though.  However,  you don't need the retaining pin.

I think it's a good idea to put a new MSH on the springy's.  And you can always get a pin and put it in your new one.  In fact, I'd just get a whole new set of MSH guts.  Because I've heard they use a different pound spring than typical and I swear mine didn't have the cone shaped plunger at the bottom.  Oh what's it called....... the the  Is that called a plunger?  The "cap" is the one at the top, right?

My cousin's and nephew's still go bang every time the trigger is pulled with a round in the chamber.  Hmm.  Maybe they're defective....

ILS does not come with a pin, when using an aftermarket mainspring housing you can add a mainspring pin, but as posted the firearm will function just fine without it.  It makes take down more of a pain, but thats it.
