I'm very new and have never worked or handled 1911s and there has come an opportunity for me to pick up a RIA full rail frame Tactical 1911 with a GI slide.  It has a kydex holster, 100 rounds of American eagle ammo and 2 mags.  He is looking to get $550 for the setup...  So I need advice....  Snag it or stay away?

Has anyone tried to put a magwell on their RIA? Smith and Alexander website doesn't list RIA for their magwells. I was thinking that RIA followed Colt pattern parts?

I have a gov't model and wish I had spent a little more for the tactical.  Mine has never given me any trouble and generally lives in the center console of my truck.

Here's mine bought 5 years ago.  The logo is the same (only no โ„ข). They also weren't painting it in then so it looks a lot cleaner.

Mine has been dependable from day 1.

I also have been looking for a 1911. I saw Bud's has these right now so I am real close to picking one up as well. The on line reviews sounded good.

They advertise a fully railed double stack but I don't think there are very many on the shelves at all, if any.   I finally saw a 22 TCM / 9mm doublestack gun in a shop last week.  Second one I've ever seen and I bought the first one I ran across.

I like it.  It has been reliable with both barrels, but mainly I shoot 9mm.

It wasn't difficult to get the trigger to 3 lbs using the stock parts.  The mag catch needed deburring but that's all I had to do.  Pretty accurate too.  Takes Para mags.

I like the idea of the 22TCM but I don't know what it's purpose would be in my collection.  I tried talking myself into it because of the 9mm barrel.  My wife doesn't shoot much, but the only handgun of mine she will shoot is my XD9 subcompact.  One of the wives at the gun club that does shoot shot a Glock 19 and recently got the Kimber 9mm 1911 and loves it.  And many of the women in our Ladies Only Basic Pistol Course also liked it a lot.  So I've been thinking of having my wife shoot the Kimber, and if she likes it, picking up the TCM with the 9mm barrel to maybe get my wife to shoot a bit more.  Of course this is all me tricking myself into a practical reason to buy this gun.  At least the ammo isn't too cost prohibitive.  It's priced close to 45acp anyway.

Mine works great with Chip McCormick mags. I have one 7 round with a flush fit base plate that I carry with, and an 8 round with a padded base plate as a backup. I do plan to get a few more of the 8 round mags.

I carry cocked and locked, 1 in the chamber, 7 in the mag, hand loaded 230gr Hornady XTPs. It is reliable with everything I've shot, and accurate with most everything. Mine doesn't like Hornady ball that I hand loaded much though. Not terrible , but it just isn't the best for it. Yours might like it. The only ball mine likes so far ( I don't buy loaded ammo often so this is the only one I've tried ) is the Magtech FMJ.

It's a laser beam with the 200gr and 225gr LSWC hand loads. The 230gr XTPs are it's favorite, though. Good enough to shoot cans at 40-50 yards offhand with them, and the lead. I found a plastic , life sized dove in the yard a week ago, that has a clip on the bottom so I clipped it on the top of the dog pen ( no dogs ), and from my patio it's an easy shot, about 35 yards. I couldn't be happier. It has outperformed many of my more expensive big name 1911s.

Get out and enjoy it. Load for it if you don't already. Save money and make a better product, or shoot about 5 times more ammo and spend the same.

There will be a small gap at the bottom. Good thing about the one you bought is you can have the slide cut for correct spec sights.

So,

Finally took her out shooting today and she is very angry...  The beavertail on that sucker is just mean, there is still chunks of meat left on it...  Otherwise it is very accurate and ran with no problems, I just need to get a longer and smoother beavertail so I can actually shoot more!

Any suggestions of a beavertail that will not slice my thumb off?

Very nice RIA,OP. I picked up my RIA 1911 FS-Tactical a few weeks back, got it brand new for $400. I have about 250 rds through it, runs smooth, very accurate. Still need to change the grips though.

Someone has pulled the beavertail off and put that god-awful GI grip safety back on it.  The slide also looks like it came off a different gun.   If nothing else, you can take a file to the edges of the grip safety so it won't be so damned sharp.

Show pics of your grip on the gun. Have someone take the photo.

There is no reason that it should take any meat from your thumbs with a proper grip.

Grip looks good to me.  High thumbs is an excellent way to grip a 1911 if fast follow-up shots and positive safety control is something you value.    But it doesn't usually play well with unbobbed spur hammers and square edged grip safeties.   99% of my 1911s have beavertails for that reason.

I didn't do a mag well but I changed the MSH to an Ed brown smooth back on the wife's gun. It was a little longer than the frame, but there's a good chance all the browns are like that, I've never worked work one before. Other than that just fits right in.

OK, as the other poster said, you are gripping a little high, putting the web of your hand in the perfect spot for the slide to hit it. The thing is , it isn't really too high. You could get away with it if you changed to a large beaver tail.

If you shoot well with that grip, and you control the pistol well with it, I wouldn't change the way you do it, but rather change the part out.

My concern was that you might be gripping the gun with the thumb of your left hand around the back of your right hand.

If you wanted to change your grip, then I would suggest holding the gun out in front of you with your left hand, and then approach the gun with your right hand like you're going to shake hands with it. Start by putting the webbed part of your hand down around the bottom of the grip safety area, and slide it up until it stops without using too much pressure. Then grip the gun in the normal fashion. Then take your left hand and finish the job, the same way you're doing it now. You'll have pretty much the same grip, but lower, and you won't get the bite.

The other thing a high grip will , or can do on a 1911, is your thumbs could interfere with the slide stop, causing the slide to lock back while there are still rounds in the mag. It can also cause feeding issues as the bullet can hit the slide stop on the way in.

A lot of people that start out shooting other types of guns will have jams on a 1911 simply due to the their grip.

Hammer bite sucks. Might want to order a commander style when you order the Ed Brown grip safety
