I have any older springfield that I'm not sure if its a mil-spec or another model. It has NM on the mag and at the beginning of the serial # does this mean its a national match?

A picture would go a long way as to identifying it.

As far as NM; I can't recall for certain that it means national match, but it does indicate that the fitting was done in the US.

NM means most of the fitting was done in the US and it is considered a US made gun and not Brazil -where the frames and slides are forged.

It does not mean National Match.

Sorry for not adding pics . Is it safe to say its a mil-spec version than? Thanks for the replies

No, it's not. It could be a Loaded model, or possibly others.

Does it have a beavertail safety? Novak sights, or basic GI style? These will help.

rear-only serrations on slide= milspec
front and rear serrations on slide, novak sights, and beavertail= Loaded

ETA: Birddog had it covered, just wanted to comment on the serrations incase the OP wasn't familiar with types of sights

Well, now I'm thoroughly confused. Again, please take some pics; it would solve this in one post.

rear-only serrations on slide?  If vertical, it's a GI, if slanted, mil-spec.  We need PICS!!

To make this even more confusing, Springfield did make (years back) a GI-Milspec.

These were made before the Milspec and the GI became 2 different models.

I don't know for sure, but this MAY have been before the NM maked frames.

Pics would help.

Is this pistol phosphate finished (parked or matte), or blued?

I think it's either a Standard or a G.I.-Mil-Spec from a long time ago.

Nice find!

It's a milspec, but yeah, those markings are a little different.  The one I had, had the crossed cannons towards the front and the lettering a little higher than that.  Interesting two tone look also.

That's not a beavertail OP.  That's a GI style grip safety.

I take that back, the lettering is about the same on the one I had but the crossed cannons are on the front of the slide.

It's different because his is from before they had the Mil-Spec they make now.

Back in the day they had a Standard and a G.I. Mil-Spec.  Ithink his is a G.I. Mil-Spec if the grips are original.

I had a Standard a long time ago that was the same as we call a Mi-Spec now.
