This one has a bit of history and need some real advice on what to do here...
I have an R1 Enhanced and I have about 1k rounds through it. I started noticing very bad FTEs on the LAST round only so I tweaked the extractor as much as possible but would still get stovepipes on the last round. I had Remington send me a new extractor and tested with the same result. I test by removing the magazine and firing a round. I ended up sending it in to Remington and got in back last week. They replaced many worn parts but nothing to really do with my problem and they did replace the extractor even though I had the new one in there they just sent me. I took it out today and racked the slide and dropped the mag and fired and had a stovepipe immediately. I tweaked the new extractor they replaced for the second time and it was a little better but most of the rounds would drop down through the magwell or stovepipe or come back and hit me in the face. Again, this was only while the mag was dropped, ejection was fine with the mag in. Here's the interesting part... I shot 15 rounds with an empty mag in with NO malfunctions and the ejection was OK but maybe a bit weak or erratic but acceptable. The BIG question, is this normal? Should I be concerned or just roll on? I've read other threads that state you should be able to fire with a dropped mag and it SHOULD eject as normal. |

I'd just keep shooting it and not worry a whole lot, as long as it ejects reliably with a mag inserted. It may not be ideal but it should work.
You may have an out-of-spec breechface or ejector, but I wouldn't put a whole lot of confidence in Remington being able to do much about it. A good smith could probably determine what the issue is, but I wouldn't be inclined to sink any more money into a Remington. |

Yea, I think I'm just going to roll on with it since it works the way it should with the mags in. I was really curious to hear if this is common in 1911's or not? Just seems like a crazy issue. How often to people really shoot with their mags out? I guess this is rare. |

May be more common than you think, many people will never find out as many people will never shoot without a mag inserted. Both myself and my brother have an R1 with a pretty high round count, and a buddy has an R1E that's getting up there as well. Next time we're at the range I'll try and remember to test this for you. |

I can't let this go for some reason because I'm trying to get this firearm in shape to carry and I can't stand carrying something that isn't 100%. Heck, I don't even like having it in my safe when it's not 100%. I read again on another site that said you should be able to fire 16 times without a mag and the ejection pattern shouldn't even change. I'm getting erratic ejection with the mag in (last round only) and stovepipes with the mag out. I've adjusted the tension on the extractor again and again. I've already emailed Remington to send it in once again. I guess if they don't the real issue this time, I'll have to dump this gun and go for a SA 1911.

I replied on your other thread too but with this one in context I am getting the bigger picture. You may want to get a good extractor like a Wilson, Brown, or C&S. If you know anyone that works with 1911's perhaps they can take a look for you? |

I did take it in to a gunsmith and he told me the tensions was OK even after I told him what was happending. He just wanted to replace the extractor for $80.00. I have the UPS label coming from Remington again so I'm sending back to them for the 2nd time. I guess I'll either have to find a GOOD gunsmith this time or dump the r1 for something else. I have a feelingj Remington won't resolve this issue. |
