I have a Remington R1 1911 and want to put an ambidextrous safety on it. Is there any gunsmithing involved in order to do this or is it something I can do myself with just basic hand tools? Thanks, Matt

The safety's internal lug must be fit to properly block the sear.   It isn't beyond the skill set of a fairly handy individual with a good file, but it's important to realize exactly what filing is required, how much, and how to check to be sure the sear is being 100% blocked.    The best possible scenario is that it will simply drop in and require no fitting, but it's rare.

There may also be some trimming of the grips required for full disengagement of the levers.

Sometimes the frame is too thick for the relief in the safety lug and the safety will need to be clearanced before it will fit fully into the frame and travel its full range of motion.

Very good info thanks for taking the time to explain it.
I will probably just have someone install it for me.
Can you recommend the best place to purchase one?

Mostly I buy from Brownell's, and Midway on the rare occasion they have something in stock.
