I'm getting a Sig 1911-SSS, I believe it has the external extractor.  Any problems with this, or is it personal preference.

What are the pluses and minuses of each system?

The external extractors work really well. They don't require adjustment, they are more tolerant of abuse like dropping the slide on a chambered round. The downside is they are ugly on a beautiful gun. Kind of like a supermodel with a mouth full of rotten teeth.

I think EGW makes a tool steel extractor for the sig if you want to upgrade.

As long as you avoid the Kimber you will be fine.
Sig and S&W have the EE figured out, Kimber tried and went back to an eternal.

9mm' pretty much nailed it

I wish they lasted that long.

Traditionally, internal only. Functionally, Sigs and S&Ws work just fine.

WADR Have you ever tried to  remove or replace an 'external'? One of the beauties of the 1911 is that almost anyone can take it down to nothing, if they are paying attention. If you do any amount of shooting... don't even think about it.

As has been said, even Kimber gave up. As I recall, it was their idea.

This! I love Springfields and Colts. I've never had problems with internal extractors in these. However, from what I've read and seen at the club I wouldn't have a problem owning a S&W E series at all, they work. However, I wouldn't own a Kimber with an internal extractor, much less a Kimber with an external extractor, they are little more than junk in my experience... I sold and gave away all my Kimber products two years ago for good reason.

It doesn't matter to me either way. As long as the gun works.

High Powers have had external extractors for about 50 years,, Although I believe you are are correct that Kimber was the first 1911 with an external.

I remain convinced that the reason my Hi-Power is an unreliable POS is the external extractor.

Internal has worked for a hundred years.....why change now?

I feel the same way about my Glocks!  I have used a Kimber for years with external, no issues and just got  a Sig Scorpion with one also.  As long as the weapon works what does it really matter?

Internal.  If it is external then you posted the question in the wrong section.

Well, let's not go quite that far, eh?

There's so many mfgrs now using them, it's not really noticeable nor a detraction from a 1911, IMO.

If it works thats all that matters.

For the record I steer clear of external extractors. I just dont trust em

OK so to throw an example into the fray.

How is the reliability with the E-Series S&W's?

I have a lead on one.

Both my external 1911s work fine, I just don't like them personally

I disagree, I think an external extractor looks nice on the side of a 1911. Adds to the overall look of the weapon, IMO.
