I am building / having built a 1911 for myself from scratch. I will be supplying a local shop with most of the parts and they will be doing the fitting (since I don't trust myself to fit the parts lol). The shop has done work for my before and I am very happy with their results.

Is there anything I should know / tell them going into this project as far as types of parts / brands I should ask for or tell them to stay away from? I don't mind paying a little extra for parts if I know they are good. But then again, some parts don't need to be super-heavy duty.

The biggest item I have left to buy is the barrel. The gun will be in 45ACP, with the traditional style feed-ramp cut, and with the "commander" length barrel. The gun will be used for CC, and I would like a stainless barrel. What companies should I be looking at for a barrel?

And lastly, I have a question about springs. First thing is the main-spring. The gun is going to be an officer frame, so therefore an officer M.S.H. will be used. Do officer framed M.S.H.'s use the same guts as a government 1911? And second is the recoil spring. What weight spring should I get for this build?

Thanks!

I would use kart or bar sto for the barrel, wilson ed brown or nighthawk other parts depending on your budget.

Thanks for the input. I am buying pars here and there, and once my tax return comes back, I will order some more stuff. I wouldn't say there's a limitless budget, but I would say that I don't mind spending if it's worth it. That's one reason why I chose to do this build rather than buy one custom made for me, I can buy a little at a time and build it exactly how I want.

I'm a big fan of Kart. I used a Kart for the 1911 I built for myself, and it's a 1" at 25 yards gun.

I hope you enjoy your new 45! I will add however that should you build it and decide to sell later, unless the shop is a very well known 1911 builder ( Novak heirloom etc) you will never get the cost of the build back out of it.
I know it is nice to have a unique gun built exactly like you want- I have had it done myself - but for the money more often than not you'd be better off cost and resale value wise with a known maker. Since you said commander slide and officer frame you describe a les Baer stinger which runs around two grand

As far as what parts (brand, types, etc.)... if you are working with a competent and experienced (key words being, competent and experienced) 1911 builder that you trust, I would let him make the recommendation on parts based on your input as to what the gun will be used for.

In my experience some times the parts that the customer requests, based on what brands they know or have seen, aren't actually the best choices for the job.

I totally agree and I am letting them pick some of the parts. For example, they did a complete overhaul on the trigger of my Range Officer, where they fit and replaced the trigger, hammer, interal pieces, springs etc.  For trigger stuff, I am going to tell them to use what they want.

Some of the parts though, like the mainspring housing, grip safety, thumb safety etx, I am picking. I am using a S&A M.S.H., an EGW thumb safety, Heinie "ledge" sights.

As to the barrel, I may call the shop and see what they would suggest. I wanted to ask on here so that I have multiple opinions rather than going by the shops advice. Its not that I dont trust them, cause I do. I have seen their work and I have no doubts of their capabilities. I just figured if I gave them most of the stuff, the parts they will have to prder will be less and thus an easier build for them.
