My brother in law is looking to buy a gun off a buddy of his. It is a 2004 "N" Springfield Armory black stainless (PX9154L). It has scuff marks on the top of the slide and sides of the frame. The inside looks like someone scrubbed the crap out of it and left bristle marks or something. The trigger is carbon fiber, sucks, and is fitted very poorly. Half cock does not work and it sounds rough when you rack the slide. Also the rear sight was switched to an adjustable one that looks like someone use a flat head screwdriver and hammer to put it on. He wants $600 for it. I don't have any pics of it right now. What does everyone think?

Thanks

I think I'd be hard pressed to pay half of that.

He took it to a gun shop near us today and they said it was worth the asking price. I told him they were full of crap. I personally don't like the store and constantly tell him and others I know, that they are wrong about stuff constantly.

I told him at most $400 and that was pushing it for me. He doesn't want to dick over his friend and I understand that, but for a little more money he can have a much better 1911.

This has all the earmarks of the kind of situation where for every one thing you can see is wrong, there are 3 more under the covers.

I couldn't agree more. Just found out that his friend said he had the gun since 1997. When we called SA to find out info on the gun the serial number said it was a 2004. I have never run into this before. Right now I am telling him he should probably walk away.

One in good condition is about 1K new once if you find about 1350

There are many other options out there that will not result in buyer remorse. Offer $250 cash and then run away if he wants more. it needs to go back to SAI for a rebuild imo.

Or $800 brand new if you buy it online at Buds.

To the OP, I would run from that gun at almost any price

Sounds like BUBBA got a hold of that thing.

This^^^

It sounds like a parts gun to me. At best, it's a frame, slide, and possibly a barrel that could be used to build something decent...maybe.

Personally, I'd pass on it and look for a new RIA or something for about the same price. If he's going to have to rebuild it anyway, he may as well start with a clean slate.

ETA: Your B-I-L should be a little more selective when choosing "buddies".

Long story short, bubba did get a hold of it. Turns out another friend borrowed it for a while and he beat the crap out of it. The dates not matching was because it was sent back to SA and they replaced the whole gun.

When I originally saw the gun, it was only for a few minutes. After looking at it for a while I have been messing around with it while it is here. I took out all the parts and put in some old kimber parts and lube. It already feels 100X better. Besides some of the appearance issues, I think the internals were just shot (that's putting it nicely). Feels better than some NIB guns I have handled. It might turn out to be a good project gun if the price is right.
