Seriously thinking about getting an STI Tactical .45.  The main question I am wrestling with 4.15" or 5".  My intended use is just general recreational shooting (pins, target practice, maybe play around with IPSC or IDPA at a local club).

I am pretty sure on the ..45 cal but should I be considering .40SW?
Is it worth in to get the hard chrome option?

My first STI so either way I will be making a investment in MAGS.

Thanks in advance

I have come all around doing this several times, and I think for a 1911 guy who wants a higher capacity gun it is a good idea. I say get the full 5in barrel, especially since you are not gonna CCW it much. Break out the BIG wallet for magazines, unfortunately, and get more than you think you will need. One downside to this gun is that you won't just casually run into a mag at the local gun shop.

I'd get one from Brazos and have them tune it a bit first...great people to deal with and their tune up package is great.

I don't believe the 5.0 Tactical is legal for IDPA.  4.0 and under are OK due to the long dust cover and bull barrel.  Personally I prefer the 5.0 guns as a general thing.

A 5.0 .40 is probably the best fit for USPSA.   9mm or .45 4" for IDPA.

They say 9mm 2011s are the easiest to get running, followed by .40s and then .45.   I think this is because .45 tends to interfere with the slide stop lug as they feed up through the magazine.   I have two .45 2011s and have had to remove material from the slide stop's internal lug on both of them to get reliable feeding.

9 or .40. .45s have a much reduced capacity and a reputation for extra trouble.
