After spending much of my time in firearms with AR's and newer model pistols (sig226 and glock)  I've decided to take the plunge on a 1911.  I want to get this as more a part of collection piece and range shooter rather than fill a niche in my defensive shooting.  I've settled on the Kimber line and SIG 1911.  I'm leaning Kimber due to the research done.  I really prefer to not spend my than $1200 so I'm looking at their custom line and stumbled on these three:

Stainless Target II

Stainless TLE II

Stainless TLE/RL II

Could someone with experience with these models or Kimber in general weigh in.  I like to try to do as much research as possible especially when looking at dropping $1000 on a pistol.

I have a Kimber Custom II and I don't think I'd do it again. It just doesn't feed anything other than ball.

Right now I have my eyes on the Sig TACOPs.

I currently own 3 and all run 100%. there are some people that had issues but every manufacturer does from time to time.

I have 5 Kimbers and haven't had any issues with them. One thing I don't like with Kimber is the plain black front sight. There just isn't enough contrast for me to pick them up. I've replaced mine with 10-8 brass bead and fiber optic sights.

SIGs are pretty good (I carry a C3), but you also have to check them out carefully as well. I just passed on a CPO TacOps. The price was great, but as I was giving the pistol a good once-over, I noticed that there was no gap between the barrel throat and the feed ramp on the frame (Hmmm, I wonder why it was a CPO).

So moral of the story is that SIG and Kimber can produce lemons.

That being said, I think SIG's customer service is much better so if you ever do have any troubles, your experience with SIG will probably be much better.

my kimber custom II is my carry gun, getting close to 10k rds with zero failures. shoots all ball i feed it, and i routinely put speer gold dots, winchester ranger ammo, and the crappy winchester jhp "white box" with no issues.  it runs every mag i have used-the kimber factory mags, springfield mags(metal form i believe), random gunshow "gi" mags, and of course wilson, cmc, and tripp mags- all run 100%.  only bad thing with the blued guns is finish wear, but i don't care what wear she gets..looks good to me

Lucky. I get about a 10% failure to feed rate with hollowpoints. Ball is 100%

I'm slowly changing things on it over time. So far, just the grips and mainspring housing. I need night sights. I would also like to get it smithed for reliability.

What weight recoil spring do you run?  My buddy was having about the same failure rate with HPs and I put in an extra wolff 18.5 I had. runs 100% now.

Great looking weapon you have there
