Hi there,

Maybe somebody can help me out with a problem I'm having with my SA 1911A1. I've had the weapon gunkoted and when I took it to the range first time after getting it back from the gunsmith it discharged when the slide came of the slidestop without having any finger near the trigger. I released the slide with the slidelock, not by racking the slide back. After unloading I've noticed that there was almost no trigger pressure. The hammer falls with only the slightest touch.

Check for builod up inside the frame.  Check for correct tension on the sear spring.  Return it to the GS and have him fix it.

Check grip safety to insure it is working and if not disassemble and correct problem with mainspring. Check fireing pin and breechface for buildup that may cause pin getting stuck. Most likely cause was improper reassembly.

This is why I don't want any kind of paint like coating on my guns. It builds up the tolerances/clearances.

This. Although does your gunsmith have experience working on 1911s? I'm surprised this wasn't discovered when he put the pistol back together.

For your own safety, call Springfield Armory.  Get their take on this.  They don't want you to have an accident that could lead to death.  They can fix this.

It almost sounds like the people who worked on your pistol were either having a bad day or were not qualified.  This proplem should have been discouvered by any competent gunsmith.

Not ripping on the OP, but a good example of why you should always do a run through and function check when you get your pistol back from work.

My guess is that the sear spring was incorrectly reinstalled.  The photo below illustrates the correct placement of each sear spring leg.

Your fears are misplaced. There is no way to get any kind of build-up that affects function by spraying and baking a coating. If your slide/frame fit were tight, the frame rails would be avoided. If loose, they would be coated. This is all assuming a person of some skill is behind the spray gun. Otherwise all the coating is on the exterior surfaces, and after baking is so thin that it won't conceal anything or fill in markings unless maybe triple-coated.

I had a similar issue.  Bought the gun used, chamber a round, hammer drops and fires round.  Took to GS, he took it apart and fixed it.  Took it home, chambered a round, gun fires again.  I took it back, he took apart, said he couldn't see a problem.  I said, "replace sear, spring, etc."  He installed a Nowlin hammer/spring/sear/sear spring kit.  When I went to retrieve it, he mentioned that he closely inspected all parts and found that they were worked hard.

I've not had a problem since.  Gun runs like a champ now.

Thanks all! Searspring was the culprit indeed. Good point of doing a function check before a life fire exercise.

Glad to hear it.

I'm guessing you're not letting this 'smith work on any more guns.

Well...I know the smith to be highly professional and a true gent. The matter has left him quite embarassed and of course he fixed my 1911 properly. We're just happy that the round went into the grass and only damaged my ego. I guess we all have a bad hairday once in a while.

I'm glad that the issue is resolved and more importantly that no one was hurt.

Returning a gun without a basic safety check is much more than a bad hair day.  If someone was hurt, he would be more than embarrassed.
