Why is it that I've never seen a 1911 with a lockup mechanism similar to a Glock, XD, HiPower, etc. Is there some reason that I've only seen barrel link guns? I was talking about this at work today with a friend, and he said that he thought he had seen something about one once, but I can't find anything. I did find one with a gas-retarted blowback action, but that looks kinda complicated, and I'm thinking that a locking block style lockup would simplify the design.

There have been a few.  They seem to make the slide taller than a typical 1911 slide so I don't see how it would be much of a benefit.

I believe the STI LS9 / LS40 is one of these currently in production.  Springfield Armory offered a model called the Omega around 20 years ago.  You still see some of them floating around out there.

I think a friend might have one of the Omegas. I'll have to check his gun rack next time I'm over there, never really paid much attention to it, just thought it was some non-standard 1911ish gun.

Peters Stahl 1911 has a link less set up and spring guide set up like a Glock. They were made back in the 70-80's.
