Was thinking today about 1911's that have the older style "rat tail" grip safeties.

On my Delta Elite (which has one of the "rat-tail" grip safeties), I cannot fin a way to grip the gun to where I would experience "hammer bite", as I have small, skinny hands.

One thing that I was thinking was to cut off the tail, to give it a little more stream-line look. I came across the pic below, and I actually think it looks really cool.

Has this been done before? Any reason to do it, or not to do it?

it is always possible to miss a draw, and end up with the web of your hand between hammer spur and a hard spot...

Either find a replacement, use a Wilson drop in beavertail, or fit one to your gun by cutting the frame. If you wanted to use your stock parts, you could cut down the grip safety's spur, and bob the hammer...

If it were me, I'd fit an Ed Brown Memory Groove beavertail grip safety. You could do it yourself by buying a beavertail jig, or you could have a competent smith do it. I would think that it would be the best looking and feeling option. I would also upgrade your hammer to a skeletonized one of your choosing to give it a more modern look.
