!!! Outstanding! I'm dying to see what the cleaned up bore looks like (or hear what it looks like anyway) and what the frame's feedramp and other internals look like. (I'm at work so I don't have audio, and the gun looks a bit dirty in that last video so it's not real clear what the condition is)
Next up is to pry out that firing pin stop It would be awesome if it were still serviceable! Entirely understandable if it's just pitted/corroded beyond usage, but either way, awesome job |

Were there ever any "old school" theories about carrying hammer down on a spent casing? I remember my dad used to carry his BHP hammer down on an empty chamber (we're talking mid 70's with USMC training) but is there any chance the owner of the 1911 was carrying hammer down with a spent casing placed back in the chamber?

I altered the electrolysis setup I'm running the barrel now https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Ge01BgNW5Cw |

I think your reverse eletrolysis is iron-pating the shell casing. I advise knocking the spent shell out before further eletrolysis of the barrel.
You might also try to shoot a jet of brake cleaner or penetrating oil into the firing pin hole in the breech face of the slide, and see if you can get stuff loose enough to pull the firing pin stop plate. Do the disconnector, seer and hammer look usable? Wish I could find a project like that .... |

| Also if the shell casing is brass - (might have to scratch it a little to see) - a bath in Sweet's 7.62 or some other amonia bassed copper-fouling remover solvent will eventually eat the case until you can get it out. |

| is there any reason a new barrel could be used? i know it would probably take some fitting but i cant male out any rifling left in the barrel.now for some reason the aduio cut out on me right after you put the shell casing on the magnet so i didn't hear any of the rest of the video. so maybe you explained it there but trying to save a old gun is great but without rifling in the barrel shooting it may be kinda pointless |
| A small punch should insert into the firing pin hole and slide the firing pin retaining plate off easily. A small brass rod or punch should be able to back the extractor out with gentle taps. Now that is is this far apart why not use a blasting cabinet with light media to blast away the loose corrosion. It isn't like you need to worry about finish. |

He has to get enough gunk out to move the firing pin that far forward - or elde dremel off the tail of the pin. Probably loose the stop plate if you go that route. |

Did he mention if the firing pin will depress? A punch would only give him a good handle to slide the firing pin stop down by hand. I would push in by hand and then try gentle taps to the back of the firing pin in case the back edge is rusted to the inside of the firing pin stop hole. They would be very gentle taps though. Given that lettering is still visible on the slide and frame, that means most of the pitting is not as deep as normal rollmarks...its just everywhere. That should be safe enough to handle some ball ammo but I would definately use a new barrel and link as well as a firng pin. I think he will have trouble with the small parts and detailed features being too rusted away. |

The firing pin is frozen in the rearward position, I've tapped on it lightly, but I need to get a brass punch that will fit in the space.
getting the firing pin moving is the next big issue..... the extractor looks like it should move without issue. Originally Posted By cbsaf:

Well remember that if the firing pin is in the full rearward position there should be some clearance inside the hole on the breechface. See how deep a needle will go to determine how much crud is in there. If there appears to be a decent bit of room in that small hole for the firing pin to move forward I would get a small punch and give very light taps to the firing pin to move it forward so the stop can be removed. Ingect some penetrating oil into the hole on the breechface. Keep in mind that very little of the firing pin actually touches the hole inside the slide. The spring and firing pin stop normally keep the firing pin off the side walls. I would wager that the back of the firing pin is rusted to the stop and the spring will still allow sufficient compression once the parts are vibrated loose. The spring will be toast either way. |

So, the price was right and the stars aligned The 1911 is getting finished first... but she is really getting close now, so I'm getting the next toy lined up |

Revolvers are like clockwork.. and you can't get spares for that. Keeping in mind that you don't have a barrel there.. all you have is a rusty pipe.

I was referring to making the revolver a shooter.
I think it can be done. Originally Posted By cbsaf:

| what are your plans for finishing it (so it doesn't surface rust when its all put back together and running)? |
