Hey all, I bought a used Kimber Custom Classic series one made in 1999 last week.
No idea on the round count but I'm guessing a fair amount. I won't be able to get to the range any time in the next couple weeks but I have noticed something. If I shake the gun a little up and down I can hear a slight movement. After investigating, I found that it is actually the round moving slightly in the chamber. When I take the slide off, and place a round in the extractor on the breech face it simply falls out. I thought to test extractor tension the bullet was supposed to hang in there. However, the gun will cycle all ammo by hand but I know the proof is in actually shooting it but I am concerned if the round is already loose while chambered. I know the firing pin is strong, it will shoot a pencil across the room
Anyway, should I replace the extractor before even firing it? If so, are the Wilson Bullitproof ones the best or what would the hive suggest? Thanks. |

Shoot it and see what happens. Tension the extractor if you have to or replace it if you want. I've used Wilson bullet proof extractors as replacements, the latest in my TRP after the factory extractor took a shit (broke) at 1700 rounds. At 7000, I had to adjust tension again on the Wilson so I think my next will be a Cylinder and Slide extractor. |
| for a .45, I've always had good luck removing the bearing support "dog nut" on the hook side (inside only) of the extractor which gives it a "softer" spring rate from the rear.... lock in place with an oversize firing pin stop...lightly radius the leading edge of the hook (both edges), and set up with a Weigand extractor pull gauge with between 16 and 24oz of tension... or make up a dummy round, load from a magazine, and it should slightly droop when held against the bolt face.... |
