Hey guys I recently sold a kimber and am looking to get another 1911.  I like the classic looking 1911s and have always been interested in a springer mil spec.  I found a mil spec parkerized today for under 600 but also beside it was a colt 1991 blued for 710.  Both are brand new.  The colt had a better trigger and looked very nice overall.  Im not too familiar with the colt 1991 models.  Between the two what would you go with?  Ive never owned a colt and the price seemed good.  Thanks

Both are good but.... one is a Colt.  Spend the extra $ and buy the Colt!

Springfield all the way.

ETA: I've owned both. My 1991 was my first gun ever.  I bought it at the Mainside PX on Camp Pendton.  Had it on lay-away for months.  It was a disappointment.  For one thing the front sight unstaked itself at the range and was never seen again.  Colt "quality" isn't all it's hyped to be.  Besides, isn't the 1991 a Series 80?  The Springer should be 70 Series.

Get the Colt, that is a GREAT price.

If the mil-spec's serial starts with "NM" go for it.
Otherwise, the Colt's probably the way to go.

The springer did have a NM prefix which makes the decision harder.

Colt, duh.

Nothing wrong with 1991, I love both of mine. One really hates Winchester white box for some reason, but it gobbles that cheap Remington stuff like candy. The full size is scary-accurate and hasn't had a FTF or FTE since the first 50 or so rounds (lost count of how many it has through it - several 1000 rd days + 17 years of normal weekends at the range)
But there is the chance that I just happened to get an exceptional example. With a sample size of 2 it's hard to be sure

My last two Colts have left a bad taste in my mouth.  I'm very pleased with my current NM Milspec.

Are the mil specs based off a series 70 or series 80 system?  My plans initially were to get a mil spec, send it off for a trigger job, and then off to accurate plating for a hard chrome finish.  The colt had a nice blued finish that I would leave alone.

Which ever one is still there when you go back.

Make sure all the work you want done to the pistol is finished before sending the gun out for hard chrome.

As mentioned, the Colt has the series 80 FP safety.

While the Springfield doesn't have the FP safety, it does have other features to help with the drop test.
It uses a lighter 9mm/.38 FP with extra strong spring instead of the traditional .45 FP.
It also will come with a mainspring housing that has a lock mechanism
The MSH and internals are easily replaced, but a slight annoyance if you don't want a lock in your pistol.

It comes down to what you want more.

Hard chromed Springfield

Sex.

I'm in the same boat, however I'm looking for either a Spinger Mil-spec (NM marked) or a Colt 70 series Government. I plan on getting either hard chromed.

I'd rather have the colt, but the price seems about $100 too high.

Colt is $710 and mil spec $590.  Best deal Ive seen on mil spec in my area lately is $680 otd.  Dont these colts go for around $800?

Went back today to look em both over and make a decision.  The colt was sold yesterday :(  however the mil spec was still there.  I looked it over very carefully.  NM prefix, gun was tight no rattle and very smooth mechanically, trigger was crisp, and overall it was very well put together. I put it on layaway and will pick it up in next week.  1st  thing I plan to do.......shoot the piss out of it!

I have both, the Springer is a NM serialed frame.

In stock trim the Colt is head and shoulders above the Springer. (IMHO)

The Springer is no slouch (has worked perfectly) but I like the Colt much better.

The Colt has a more 'svelte' (as they say) frame at the front strap, which makes it feel better in my hand.
The stock sear and disconnector, and hammer (even though the sear and disco are MIM) seem to give the Colt a much better and lighter trigger pull.
The Colt is a much nicer finish, although I suspect the Springfield's finish to be more durable. (blued Colt vs parkerized Springfield)
Also the Colt has the vertical serrations at the back of the slide (if that matters to you).
I do like the stock Colt solid long trigger better also, I switched out the short trigger on the Springer for a Colt unit just like the one on the 1991.

The firing pin saftey arguement comes up in this comparison, Colt has it Springer does not. (if that matters to you) But the Colt can be converted if you don't like the idea of it, or have problems with it,

I really can't think of anything I like better about the Springfield than the Colt, but the Springer has ran flawlessly. (I do like that the Springer doesn't have a FPS)

One more thing I can think of is the ILS (locking) mainspring housing of the Springfield. (I replaced mine with a standard unit).
