For a carry 1911, how often should I be replacing the mainspring? Leaning on the side of caution, once every 2 years?

age has nothing to do with it.
it is cycling that causes fatigue.
I think it is something like 5k rounds most people change out springs.

Just because I'm anal, I replace the recoil spring every ~3k and mainspring every ~6k in my .45ACP 1911's.  I could probably go a bit longer with each one, but it's cheap insurance and I buy them at dozen at a time from Brownells every year or so.

Mainspring?  Never, normally.  If I start getting light primer strikes after 100k rounds, I'll consider it then.

+1000 esp if you have a 23lb main spring (factory).

Brother Ken , when it comes to changing out the mainspring and reliable primer ignition, how do you feel about an 18 pound mainspring and a 14 pound recoil spring combination in a 5 inch single stack .45acp carried for self defense? Thank you.

Too light, IMHO.  I'd go no lighter than 23 main and 16 recoil, if you'll be shooting defense loads.

the old fashoned test was to take UNLOADED pistol, insert new (not sharpened) pencil (best if had a BarSto logo on it)... insert in barrel, hold vertical, and let the hammer fall on the flat rubber eraser...if it cleared the barrel you were good to go... don't try this with a striker fired pistol, or you will worry about your Glock   or Star PD

I just changed one out on a 1956 vintage 1911.  From the looks of the old one I'd say the Argies still had the original one in there.

I changed it out for a 20 Lb one.  I wouldn't go lighter than 19 lbs on a SD pistol.

Thank You very much.
