My EDC is a Wilson Compact CQB, but  I'm very reluctant to bring it along when I fly to places where I'm legal to carry because it'd be difficult to come up with the cash to replace it if it was stolen from my checked luggage.  I am considerin the purchase of a S&W 1911sc (bobbed "commander" model) to fill this role as I would ony be out about half as much $$ if it was stolen in transit.  Any opinions about ths particular weapon?

Can't comment on the smith but I commend you on not taking the chance of having one
Of those TSA goons get the chance to steal such a fine 1911.

You automatically get $2,500 worth of firearms coverage with your NRA membership which should just about cover the Wilson Combat.

If you're looking to justify another 1911 purchase.... Well, I can't help you there. ;)

Thanks for the update on the NRA insurance, Engineer.  When I became a Life Member, the insuance was only $1,000.00 - I guess I should check on my NRA benefits more often.  This still leaves the problem, as you noted, of wanting another 1911.  Decisions, decisions. . .  Thanks for the replies gentlemen!

If you're looking at one of the new E-Series guns, I'm a big fan of them. While I dont have the Sc framed versions, my full size models have been perfect shooters.

Yep, I'm pretty much decided on an E-Series scandium (bobbed commander length) S&W.  hile it'll never replace my Wilson, I want something reliable with ambi-safeties, nigt sights, frame checkering, etc. to travel with.  The Smith seems to have everything I'm looking at right out of the box, and your recommendation confirms some other reports I've heard.  Thanks for taking the time to write - very much appreciated!!

What is your price point? If you can go up to $1400, I'd suggest looking at the Dan Wesson Guardian. Has a checkered aluminum frame, bobbed, Commander length slide, low-profile night sights, single sided safety, etc. Looks like it should fit the bill nicely.

I am with you on the Guardian great looking weapon and top of the line for a production firearm.

For me, the Guardian looks like a winner, except that I prefer an ambi safety.  The only change I'd likely make on the S&W would be to swap out the FLGR with a standard guide and plug to make disassembly easier.  Th Dan Wesson is a nice piece, though, but nothing is really going to replace my Wilson as my #1 when not flying somewhere. . .

The new models of the S&W 1911's are actually very very nice, a HUGE upgrade from their previous models. I think they're called the "E-Series" .. I had the chance to fire one at the range that my friend had and it performs just as well as all the other high enders out there and gives them a run for their money. I would definitely recommend this!
