I'd like to expand my handgun collection to include a 1911, but I'm dead set on 9mm. Not looking to add another caliber to the mix. I'd like to get a Springfield Armory, but they seem rarer than hen's teeth. The other two options I've explored are RIA and STI Spartan. If I understand correctly they are both Armscor. Is the STI worth the extra $? Also, am I leaving out any other affordable (<$800) options?

Thanks

The Spartan is the best thing going in the $500 to $900 space IMO.  They tend to have an excellent barrel fit, something I couldn't say with a straight face about my SA Loaded 9mm.

Less than $500 and I'd look for a Rock Island.  More than $900 and it might make sense to step up to a Trojan.

Any reports on the long term durabillity of the RIA or STI?

Define your version of long term in round count?

Sti guns see Large volume from use in USPSA style shooting. Ammo cost per month can exceed pistol cost for some serious shooters.

to reinforce what Gregory_K said...one of the Jamacian shooters comes up to a Ruskin (Fla) range I visit, and usually has 40,000 rounds of Atlanta Arms .40 ammo shipped... he will typically shoot 10,000 a week practicing for a match like the Limited Nationals

Around 300-500 rounds a month. Wasn't sure how high quality the metallurgy was on the Armscor guns. I realize compromises will be made on a cheaper gun, just want something that won't shoot itself apart in 5 years.

if you can find one (about as hard as an SA to find however) there is nothing wrong with a good used Colt.

If you can afford that much in ammo a month you should be able to afford a higher price point 9mm. It would worth it in the end.

Yeah, the more I'm thinking about it I'd rather not half ass this purchase. Suggestions?

If you're willing to increase your budget, I'd suggest looking at STI. They offer a plethora of 1911 and 2011 (double stack with a comfortable grip) in 9mm. I've got a Eagle 6.0 that is freakin' amazing and I'm going get a Duty One soon as well.

I doubt you will run it down. RIA and STI may be in the cheaper end of 1911's (STI has alot over 1k tho) but i havent seen or heard of any real problems with them. I actually hear more problems about Springer, Kimber, and Taurus.

The 9mm won't beat up a 1911 much.  I'd have no qualms about buying a RIA.
