I have never been a handgun guy. In fact I only fired them a few times while out of state. Last year I decided to apply for my NYS hand gun permit. Well after $300 dollars and over a six month wait, I finally have it. No carry just target shooting.

My Buddy has a Springfield Loaded 1911 in stainless he is selling to me at a good price. But I went out looking for a 9mm this afternoon. I really like the STI Ranger II in 9mm and the H&K p30. I'm really leaning towards the STI unless someone here feels that that is a poor choice. Most of the polymer guns I tried felt real big and somewhat awkward to handle.

I had an HK USP .40 cal.  While it was a nice shooter; I just couldn't really like it.  I am however a big 1911 fan and I have heard great things about STI.  You cant go wrong with either choice but it comes down to what you want the primary use of this pistol to be.  If CC, I would choose the slimmer 1911 style handgun.

Thanks for the reply. I live in NY so carry is out of the question. I'm just looking for a hand gun that's comfortable and can put up with a fair amount of range use. Seems STI is popular competition shooters but I know they make a cheaper line made overseas, or so that was mentioned to me. Still haven't confirmed that yet.

I got a chance to handle a co-worker's P30 recently, it's a damn fine tool.  I would say its prob one of the finest modern autos out there if concealability is not an issue.   Built like tank.

The Spartan line has a frame/slide/barrel made by Armscor in the Philippines and then fitted with STI internals.
