I just got back from the range and have a question. My new RIA Tactical had a few rounds jam on the feed ramp. From what I gather this is called a nose dive. I have read this is usually a first round issue. In this instance it only happened in the middle of the magazine. Out of 16 HP rounds this happened 2 times, and 1 out of 100 FMJ rounds did this as well.
I noticed that the magazine that came with the gun allows the cartridges to tilt down a little especially when its not full. Could this be the cause? |

First, try a known good magazine that has been proven in another rifle.
If that fixes the problem, either toss the magazine & replace it with new magazines or mess around trying to get this magazine to work; see following: Take the magazine apart and clean the interior. Powder residue or junk can effect feeding. Also look it over for dents or damage. Make sure to put it back together with the spring and follower correctly positioned. -If it looks o.k. but still fails, Tighten the magazine catch button one turn. It may be just loose enough to allow the magazine to move...allowing the front end to tilt downward to cause a misfeed. -If that didn't get it, Rebuild the magazine with a fresh spring and current anti-tilt follower. -If that didn't work, Take the rifle to your gunsmith or send it back to the maker for repairs. |
| a308's comments apply to ar rifles- not 1911's. ALWAYS try a different mag as the first solution. you need extra mags anyway. Also as a low end 1911 I'd expect more "break in" time for the gun to smooth out. I'll make a good bet that a different ,quality mag will solve your problem, at least with hardball. |

Get your hands on a few known functional mags then run up to 300 rounds through the gun. The 3 RIA 45's I have had all required 100 to 300 rounds of ball to get broken-in and reliable. If you still have issues at 300+ rounds using known good mags, call them to ship it back. They have a very good reputation for service.

Quoted: Most likely your extractor is not tensioned properly and is too tight. You can always try a good magazine like a Wilson though. Try a McCormick or a Novak. Wilsons are not all that and a bag of cheetos. |

Tried a wilson at the range over the weekend, it worked for the few rounds I still had left. The mag that came with the gun is an ACT and I believe its the same as the Novak mags. I had a McCormick .38 super mag that lost a ton of spring tension in about ten cycles and stopped locking the slide on empty.
I also did check the tension using a cartridge following some directions I found on youtube. Tension appears to be correct, but I am a little dubious of the accuracy of the test. I plan on buying about 200 FMJ, and 100 HP rounds and putting it to the test this weekend. |
