| I was just wondering what 1911 manufacturers (and models) come from the factory already dehorned? I'm sure that there's varying degrees of dehorning (basic to near melted). The reason I ask is that I just bought a Kimber Custom II and it looks like it comes dehorned. I can't find a sharp edge on it anywhere. |

Kimber seems to do a better job than most. Ken, when did "dehorning" become a high profile subject....I have carried a 1911 for years and it seems like now it is much more talked about and taken to in some cases to extreme levels....maybe the proliferation of CCW? |

It has always been something talked up in the gun rags, at least since the late 80s. I think it probably began to gain some attention when IPSC began to gather steam. People who had to manipulate the gun in a hurry were tearing their hands up on the sharp rear sight. Custom gunsmiths would soften the sharp edges. About this time the "no snag" sights like Novaks started to gain market share. Like a lot of other custom touches, they eventually started showing up on production guns. I don't think there's a real need for a dramatic dehorning job on most 1911s, but I do like to have things like the leading edges of the slide and frame at least lightly beveled. |
