I'm in the market for a 1911.  Been looking at the Kimber Ultras and Springfield Armory Micro Compacts.  I wanted to try one out before buying.  Went to the local range and rented a Colt Defender as it was the only 1911 with a 3" barrel that they had.  Liked it.  Very compact and not too heavy.  Felt recoil was less than my G23.  The only thing I didn't like were the sights.  I could not pick up the front side very well.  Definitely want 3 dot night sights on whatever I finally buy.

Two questions.  First, I tended to shoot about an inch or so low with this pistol.  Not sure if it was a result of the front sight issue or something else.  I usually don't have this problem.  Has anyone else had this type of problem with the smaller 1911's?  Second, How many rounds is the magazine supposed to hold?  I was able to load 7 but it looks like it should hold 8.

On the defender depending on the mags you have, you can load 6+1 chambered or 7 +1 chambered.Same for other brand officer size 1911's in 45acp.Except for Para's Warthog,it's a double stack.10+1 on it.

I have the Colt New Agent 1911 XS,has the Bigdot tritium front sight, much more visible than the standard Defender front sight.

I have a Colt Defender Plus with a XS Big Dot system and a Crimson Trace laser - works great for me. I also have a New Agent with a Crimson Trace laser- actually like it better.

In my instance I found the 185gr loadings were more accurate and shot point of aim in the shorter barrel.

I have two defenders one in 45 and one in 9mm and they have different sights on them. One has three dots and the other has straight eights, I bought them used but I think that both of them are the factory sights. I don't normally like straight eights but do on that gun. I love my defender 9mm and once I ring it out a bit more it will be my primary carry gun.

I also have a Warthog and despite it being a Para I like it but I don't carry it because it is awkward with the weight of 10+1 rounds of 45 in a small package.

I used to own a Defender; good shooting gun, sadly, it was a bit too small for my hands; so i traded it...

For this.
