I dont know if this has been addressed before but does anybody make left handed 1911 parts or a complete lefty weapon.A friend of mine (a south paw) has been in contact with one of the TV custom shops and is hell bent on haveing them make one for him, for very much $$$. I was just wondering if anybody already manufactures the required componants,

As a lefty I won't look at a left handed gun of any sort. I don't see the point. In many guns, it's no problem if the gun has ambi controls and is semi auto. My ARs have ambi controls (safety and mag release) and I fumble with an AR if it has only right handed controls. In a full auto, especially an open bolt, you will get all kinds of crap in your face. Even more so if a suppressor is installed. Shooting a right handed bolt left handed sucks after you've shot a left handed bolt some (if you're left handed that is). You won't go back to a right handed bolt. Shooting a top loaded rifle like a Garand also sucks if you're left handed. The M14 type rifles are no problem for a lefty. But in one regard you are right IMO, I don't think a left handed 1911 is worth buying. |
I use the overhand method to release the slide on a pistol So the slide stop is of no concern to me. I do install ambi safeties on all my 1911s. I have just now started putting ambi safeties on my ARs. It does make it easier on me but I really had no trouble with the single side safety. I do want to try an ambi mag release though. As far as shooting suppressed I didn't notice any blow back. I have never shot anything full auto so I can't comment there. The only thing left handed I had growing up was a ball glove and scissors. I couldn't cut a straight line with those damn things either.

Believe me when I say if you are southpaw that has been using a right handed bolt, once you shoot a left handed bolt very much, that is what you will prefer by far.
As far as ambi mag releases on the AR, I have two types, the Norgon and the Knight's Armament. Both are easy to use but the Knight's sticks out quite a bit on both sides and is more likely to cause an accidental release, far more so than the Norgon. |
| I've shot a Randall left handed pistol and preferred a standard 1911. Add an ambi safety and it's done. Like someone else has already said, the only left-handed firearm that I have any interest in is a bolt action. Hopefully, your buddy doesn't go and sink a bunch of $ into a pistol he just might not be too happy with. |
