I've got a plain-jane 1991A1 Series 80 Commander Model. I don't shoot it much, but I've recently been wanting to take it out more often. Is this particular gun worth modifying? I'm thinking trigger job, extended magwell, beavertail, and sights. This isn't a gun I'll carry - it's more of a nightstand gun. Or would I be better off selling it and using the money towards a better 1911? |

It would probably be cheaper to sell yours and get a new one.
Sights plus finish touch up can run over $100 Fitted beaver tail plus finish touch up can be around $100 Magwell is a moot point IMO because not many come with one and you will need to buy one anyway. |
| I carry a Commander often. The only thing I have modified from stock is to have a Wilson beavertail put in. I may upgrade the sights. Keep your Colt. Do the mods one at a time....and think real hard about each one. Shoot the gun enough to know that you need the mod.... |

Quoted: I say this every time modding a Colt comes up...check out the Colt custom shop prices. Their prices aren't bad and it remains all Colt. They also offer things that aren't listed on the price sheet like bobtails and I'm sure mag wells as well. I never thought of that. |

I keep meaning to send my Combat Commander off to them for some work but just never seem to get it done. I hear the wait times are kinda long, like 6 months, but I'm getting used to it with NFA waits I know somebody else on here sent his to them for work and is supposed to send me pics once he gets it back. Like I said, their prices seem reasonable enough. Call them if you want something that's not listed and they can quote you a price unless it's something really strange. I am going to get a little bit of engraving work done on mine as well and they sent me a little grid diagram of the 1911 to show them exactly what I wanted along with a catalog, retail price list, and custom shop price list as well. They were friendly and helpful and their custom shop prices are listed on the web site. |
